Captain Barbosa of the good Martus Jammer Millenium Hand and Shrimp was tooling around, runnin' a mission for Cadar as a bounty hunter, when what should he run into but a Red Zorba.
Well, that ain't good. All of the good captain's ancestors who had been fighters had been brutally killed by aliens on hard -- only pacifists had survived. He'd trained as a gunbunny, and Barbosa had exactly one SINGLE point in warrior.
His officers? Mechanic Haley, Pilot Cruz, and Fire Officer LaFrench.
Did I mention the ship had no upgrades at all?
It looked as if the jig was up before it even properly started.
"Well", he says, "Here's what we'll do. We'll throw torpedoes at him until we're out, then we'll run like mad. If we get away, good. If we don't , it may help us in the gun battle."
So he lobbed Torp after torp at the alien, until after about 5 shots
82.16 AE
We have encountered the alien ... a Red Zorga.
With skill, luck, and blessing, we have somehow achieved victory over a warship of the alien. The battle was fierce and will not be easily forgotten.
For this he received both the alien killer 1 and 2 achievements .. it was evidently a big ship.

Well, that was great, but probably a fluke. But because Barbosa wanted to be a gunbunny, he built up his ship thus:
For every 7 points of level up received:
2 Wisdom
2 Tactics
1 quickness
1 stealth
1 pilot
The idea being that this would still allow him to function as a gunbunny, and the high tactics would give him reasonable odds of actually hitting the alien, while the stealth would help to keep the alien at a distance.
Having spent the $5 to unlock all upgrades, he also sprang for the following upgrades on all ships:
Extended Gun Decks
Xeno Torp Array
Titan Components
Heavy Bulkheads
Water-fuel tank
We also traded up for a Heavy Falcon, for the cargo space, better guns, and better cargo capacity with these upgrades.
212.50 AE
We have encountered the alien , a vile ship I identified as a Xytox Scout Alien.
...
With skill, luck, and blessing we have somehow achieved victory over a warship of the alien.
This ship was 40 hull with 500 crew. I assume the 500 crew were captive star traders, since obviously we couldn't conscript aliens. We stood off and lobbed torps at it until , again, the engines went down and we collected another 30K or so in salvage money.
I'm still not totally satisfied with the ship, so on 219.15 we purchase a Sniper Mk II, which gives us a little cargo space but has room for many, many more torpedoes than the old Heavy Falcon carried. Again, same upgrades. Again, same enhancement path.
While flying around, only about 25% of my time is actual bounties -- the other 75% is spent running missions for other clans or shipping them restricted merchandise (artifacts, weapons, electronics) in order to have positive rep with all factions. This means that even when I have to kill a fugitive, there is always a friendly port with water fuel, repairs and torpedoes nearby. By the time the game finished, the lowest rank was about 177 .
Tactics were as follows; Save all my torps for alien encounters. When engaging a human enemy, close to medium range and probe him with guns. If I scored hits and he didn't , close to short range and rip out his engines with guns. This would disable him without destroying the ship .. most of the time.
I lost only one battle, in 59.35 AE when I was flying my starting Aperio Calliga. A Thulun pirate blew out our engines and stole quite a bit of our water fuel. After that, once training and upgrades started to take effect (and I was flying a fast/quick ship), I never lost another battle.

We have encountered the alien, a vile ship I identified as a Sidtax alien.
With skill, luck, and blessing we have somehow achieved victory over a warship of the alien.
Same drill as before, only this time I have many, many more torpedoes to throw. Once again the engines go down, and once again we collect tens of thousands of salvage credits.
300.29 AE
We have encountered the alien, a vile ship I identified as a Jyeeta alien.
With skill, luck, and blessing we have somehow achieved victory over a warship of the alien.
Same as before. The high stealth apparently makes it very difficult for the alien to close, despite being very high level compared to me.

Travel to Riverton at Tapella Outpost and retire. After 274 years in space, I think Barbosa has pushed his luck far enough.

Who would have known that torpedoes were so powerful? My mistake was that I always kept treating the aliens like I would any human ship .. close to short range, and disable by aiming at the engines, relying on high pilot to keep from being boarded. Whenever I tried this against aliens, of course, they would board me and kill the fragile gunbunny.
This time I went for torps instead, expecting that they would simply scatter their damage across the ship and have minimal effect; while this did happen to some extent, they did a real number on the enemy engines and shields.
What a fun game! And this is my first alien ace! On hard difficulty!
Thanks for the great time, Cory and Andrew!

Brian P.
