I have found that, once and awhile, when I encounter a military ship from a faction with which I have a permit, on hitting the Acknowledge button, I find that I have surrendered. Most of the time, I am in neutral territory, usually over an independent planet. Typically, I just get the "Inspected for contraband" screen, and go on my way.
How ever, I had a recent incident where I had this happen with a faction where I had a negative reputation, due to a missed toast about a trade embargo. It got me imprisoned for a time. No big thing, but...
I was running the latest version available (as of about two days before this post) from Amazon, on a HTC Incredible.

This occurs when the reputation changes following the use of acknowledge and internally the game looses track of which you did, causing your new lower reputation (from recent ship kills, trespassing, illegal cargo, solar war stuff, etc.)
this is a bug i am trying to fix but the ST code is very complex after a year of evolutionary changes.
when it was constructed, there was no acknowledge button.
acknowledge really, actually, runs the surrender function. if it shows "Acknowledge" it is doing so because your rep is high enough that surrender won't hurt you.
sometimes, as you surrender you loose enough rep to change the behavior of the function.
the solution, i will find. simple, no it is not.
