Great Shaman, Back to Town?

     I am on the Great Shaman quest and have made it to the point where I came down some stairs and found a kind of cave with one of those rest stops in it.  I tried resting there After I fought some of the ratkins and lower shamans, but I can't get my characters to combine into one and I can't use the rest stop.  I tried going back up the stairs but cant do that either.  Is there a way to use these things while the fight isn't over?  What do I have to do ?  Thanks.

Can't camp while in combat.

Some maps have let my party leave while in combat, many don't.

I finally got all my heroes close to the stairs and left the map, with a mob of enemies on my tail. Rested and went back to kick butt.
