While it may appear that way, that is not actually the link. There is a cause and effect between Hagathrun and Nikolai's lives, but it is not "one or the other." I am very curious as to the factor for whether Nikolai lives or dies. In my two parties in Ep 4, one has Nikolai die. Quest text says later lineage will fade from the world. Confirmed that Nikolai dies after seeing his spirit. The other party has text that we became allies with Nikolai and hagathrun will watch over his lineage. This party is stuck in the necomancers sanctuary. It also has text that says Nikolai is dead in the quest log. Given the bugs this quest had, I am curious as to what determines the path. My guess is the order of erghana and hagathrun conversations that determines how the party relates to Nikolai. I can only test quest options on a limited number of playthroughs.

I am definitely curious about different storylines and how they play out. Maybe spoiler the info?

Ok, it's probably simpler than expected but -- The Siege of Gholla Outlook weakens Nikolai's ability to draw upon the power of his city, his father Baron Tazzer's and of Hagathrun, if he still lives. If the siege is still going on when you reach the City of the Dead, Nikolia is vulnerable and will die when he is forced to confront the Seer Lords to buy you the time to escape. If you have traveled to Gholla Outlook and broken the siege, then Nikolai can draw upon the power of his city and will survive.
Whether or not you decide to lay Hagathrun to rest does not impact Nikolai's connection to his city and the power he can draw from it.
If you look at other rising characters within the game (the Crone, Tyra, Kea) you can see similar relationship to their city and their people.

Interesting. Makes sense, but I wouldn't have guessed from how the quest plays out.
I'll respond later with a spoilered response bar.
