So there are two talents that I'd like to learn how to use properly. One is Denounce (melee attack/debuff for 9 heat.) and the other is Honing (ranged attack/self-buff for 12 heat.) . I'm just not sure how to have a Captain effectively use either of these. They seem to have a high heat cost and compete with other seemingly necessary talents. Any advice?

Honing + Arc Fire is the best way to get mileage out of your Buff.
Denounce is all about the Templar you have backing your Captain up imho. You want to pair the debuff with this Templar, for example, a high crit Templar will benefit from the additional chance to crit a Denounced target. Due to its higher Heat cost, it isn't something you use on just anything, but Carapace, Goliath, Spawning Towers you need out of the way...

I was hoping there was a neat combo with Honing + some sword talent for a mixed sword/gun Captain.

Honing and Arc are completely niche talents imo. I don't even consider them until I'm in my second run through of a game.
For a fraction of the heat, you can use the AoE talents and be much more effective

Isn't Arc an AoE?

It sure is, a pretty awesome template.

Maybe on really easy settings (Easy or Normal) combined with some kind of special challenge mode, Denounce and/or Honing would shine as their heat cost wouldn't be debilitating... Now to think up a challenge...

Honing is a no-go. +12 Heat for what it offers is far too expensive. I'm baffled why it isn't +9 like Denounce. Even at +9 with its current stats I likely wouldn't use it. Splitting talent points between Honing and Arc-fire is just too weak for that heat cost to be worth dealing with. Any reason not to drop it to +9 heat and see if *someone* can find a use for it?

Is there a particular justification for making it exactly +12 heat instead of +9? I'm just curious from a game-dev standpoint, if nothing else.

Just the way the balance worked out in the math

Sure, I just wanted to know how those maths worked. If you don't have time to elaborate that's totally ok though.

I don't know Honing is far from being niche in my book. Coupled to Arc Fire and some Tactics you can reach 60% crit no buff no wargear. Even better that the Scout. Packed with some Focus/Quickness you can see some pretty impressive numbers. Top of that limited AoE!
Now I know the sidearms are a bit lackluster, especially against narvs. Still you can use this build a fair portion of the game I'd say.
And don't fret too much about heat seriously. Willpower makes heat very manegeable and if you really run into trouble just bring an Engineer along.
Yeah Dennounce on the other hand... I get what you are saying, could support somehow but still seems the applications seem very limited. Coupled with the fact that the captain is the most experienced unit (by far if you had a few deaths :x). I mean you don't want him in support role!

I do agree that sidearms are not ideal vs. Narvs.
That's one of the reasons we included respec.

Dude side-arms against the little worm narvs are amazing. And Arklash, what difficulty are you speaking with respect to when you mention that heat isn't a huge deal?

Honestly, at this point you are probably better at the current BF meta than I am. I haven't played seriously since February and some of your analysis has definitely changed my thinking about some of the classes. I'll be back after Early Access tho
