I think a neat early-game relic that could be added would be a shield that shines against melee attacks but due to low auto-block is not as helpful against ranged attackers:
<Insert Name Here> +11 Parry +5% Auto-block +18% Counter-attack +8 Radiation Resist +6 Fire Resist 5 Gear Levels
The high parry counter-attack make it an ideal choice for templars facing down melee foes and that possess a strong counter talent. The resists are icing on the cake to help against the common radiation Xeno and friendly (or environmental) fire hazards.
This would be most similar to the War Shield which already has the following stats:
+5 Parry +6% Auto-block +12% Counter-attack +6% Deflection 3 Gear Levels
The War Shield isn't a relic, has 1% more auto-block, 6% deflection and costs 2 fewer gear levels, so I think it isn't entirely supplanted by this proposed relic.

drspendlove - really cool idea! Early game relics have been met with mixed reaction overall, as some players dislike the "trap" that they present. I like this alternate shield build tho.

To make it not a relic, this could still be viable. Just drop the fire res and halve the radiation res. It might be fun to see a team of counter-attacking soldiers!

fallen - If they're foolish enough to fall into a trap then they deserve to lose lol. A real Templar would have noticed the trap due to their ancestors
