Star Date 8.24 AE, Eden Quadrant.
Starship: science vessel "Beacon of Infinity", in orbit of Alta Mesa Prime
At long last, it is ready. After months of research and countless hours of resource and time consuming construction, the Star Forge has been built. The faction scholars put a great ammount of effort into restoring this technological marvel brought from the Core. The massive orbital shipyards in which the Colony Hives of the Exodus were assembled, the Star Forges are both practical and offer a boost to the Empire's moral. More importantly, while the Cadar syndicate's Imperial fleet has finished purging yet another Xeno colony, the Star Forge will allow for a steady flow of warships to fight the remnants of the xeno fleets. There are now only 5 more infested worlds, and Thulun Prime has already started construction of a colony ship to settle the system. The Empire will ban the Xeno from this Quadrant soon enough.
Me and my crew were tasked with examining some xeno biology confiscated from profiteering Star Trader captains who attempted to smuggle them through the Exchange of Alta Mesa's colony of Butakov Ring. The analysis is nearly finished, but i still struggle to define the Xeno in known standarts.
The Xeno are a collection of races genetically manipulated by the Narvidians. The 2 species inhabiting the Quadrant are the Terrox and the Xytox. I am examining a piece of Terrox biomass. The Xeno are hard to define indeed: the biology seems to fit into the plantoid category. As we know, the infection spreads across the worlds it settles. Most xeno cells are capable of sustaining themselves without assistance and multiply, and the vast majority can remain dormant, yet alive, in the vaccum of space. The plant-like matter spawns the spore carriers, animal-like creatures we think of as the Xeno themselves. These have a strong exoskeleton, thick skin and a bone structure. They are lacking in internal organs, however. They have a sort of brain, and a nervous system which controls the body, yet most organs one would find in a human are replaced with simple plantoid matter.
Walking plants. Or...fungus?
Destroying the brain kills the spore carrier but the body's xeno biology can be quick to spread after death, starting a whole new colony. This is why the xeno are so hard to deal with. They spread like wildfire.
And of course, they are capable to enginerring spacecraft, something quite extraordinary for non sentient beings. Clearly, the design is craved onto their genetics. Nearly every component is organic. The ship is itself a xeno. And the small non organic matter ir likely extracted from the worlds in which the starships are built.
The xeno are parasites whose host is whatever habitat they find themselves in. They do not require any other species to coexist with. They consume the worlds they colonize, infecting their ecosystems and creating planet wide biomasses. I doubt each individual xeno has a mind of their own. Probably some sort of Hive Mind, or group of Hive Minds.
