I'm working on clearing up the Attribute article on the wiki. I found a good thread about skills and how they work, but I can't seem to find the same thing for Attributes. I know some of the things that attributes do, mostly what is already on the wiki, but I was wondering more about some of the attribute tests, such as in the various operations. In the operations, normally attributes are paired with a skill and help determine reward levels and also provide saves for negative outcomes. Probably the biggest question is whether those are always pulling the captain's attributes or if attributes are also pooled like skills in some of these situations. I think the other option would be that maybe the highest scoring officer could be tested in place of the Captain, but I just don't know how it all works. Any help in understanding attributes and how they work would be appreciated.

Captain's Attributes are used whenever you see an Attribute listed.

... which is why I always prioritize Attributes (A) for my captains.

Skills can be increased through jobs, so they have some avenue to be improved, but Attributes are fixed for the game. Also many skill tests, tests pools of the ship, so it doesn't give me that big of an advantage if my cap has +4 something. Whereas it's his attributes alone that get tested.

With a merchant captain I typically go with: 14 Strength 24 Quickness 25 Fortitude 23 Charisma (+2 through Charmer) 25 Wisdom 25 Resilience has been working well for me for Captain Tests on any difficulty level on the game.

If you are just getting high attributes for skill tests, make sure the numbers even, not odd. Skill tests only use half the value of any attribute, and I'm pretty sure it rounds down.

On the other hand, Talents use every point of Attributes.
Health equation uses every point
Morale equation uses every point.
Initiative calculation uses every point
Death Save uses every point.
Not something I'd write off entirely if you want to get your Attributes perfect.
Confirmed -- Skill Saves + Captain's Attribute use 50% of Attribute, rounded down.

Wasn't there a limit, too, to how much an Attribute can contribute to the % of a talent? Something like [X + Attribute]% topping at 45%?

Well, considering Attributes max at 30 + Traits, I am not sure the equation you posted would have much effect.
I don't think so.
Did you have a specific Talent in mind?

Something like Criminal Connections:
When executing a trade at the Black Market worth over $5,000, gain a 30% + Charisma chance to learn about a Contact

Charisma is used without any maximum or modification.
