How can I keep my reputation positive with all the factions? I find that doing missions (especially the story missions) end up trashing my rep. If you want to try and keep neutral to good rep with all of the Factions, your main options are as follows: 1) Play as a peaceful merchant, and ignore missions. 2) Play as an Explorer-Smuggler, and ignore missions and intel except to get better Black Market Access. 3) Prepare to spend a ton on bribes for Contacts that can give you pardons. It is hard to stay neutral to positive with all of the Factions, and this is intentional.

STF focuses on the concept that you will make enemies AND allies. You should keep that in mind during play. You have to really go out of your way to try to keep everyone positive and it will be a constant struggle.
Buy some Pardons.

You can work on doing missions related to Alliances as well.

thanks for the replies. I'm finding STF much more challenging (in a good way) than STRPG. Pretty easy to get big positive rep with everyone there.
the problem with ignoring missions is that I won't be able to get personal rep and hence trade permits. I guess I can just do the missions that are not against another faction. Which contacts are more likely to offer peaceful missions?
the problem with buying pardons is getting a faction contact that can sell me a pardon. Which contacts are more likely to offer introductions to contacts in another faction?
I love talents "market confidant" and "friendly banter". But they won't help when I'm locked out of the spice hall and exchange because I'm a wanted criminal.

I haven't played for a while, but as I recall the Patrol minigame can give you a rep bonus w/o reducing rep with other factions. (I'm not sure about other minigames.) I've used this to offset rep loss from missions and stay neutral.
Another question might be, how do you raise rep with one faction without lowering it with others?
Are there talents that do this, maybe a merchant talent that bumps rep for a trade?

The by far best way of raising rep without causing a negative offset is destroying and salvaging xeno ships. Just saying...

How can I keep my reputation positive with all the factions? I find that doing missions (especially the story missions) end up trashing my rep. albma , I walk you through maintaining positive rep (with all factions) in my Advanced Let's Play on youtube (http://startradersrpg.proboards.com/post/198291/thread). Essentially, I take missions early on to make money/gain experience while avoiding trading into the trade ban. As mission steps are completed on a landing zone, return to orbit and patrol to regain any rep loss. Patrol on additional planets of the affected faction (and others) to stay ahead of the rep curve. By the time the initial trade bans are resolved, I normally have a level 4 trade permit in my faction, and enough skills talents to mitigate patrol risk cards. So, just another idea on how to get/keep positive reputation with the factions

This mission types wiki page might shed some light on which types of Contacts give more peaceful missions. startraders.gamepedia.com/Mission_TypesIts as you would expect from their names though -- Merchants, Commerciers, Doctor missions.

Right on tenbsmith. Yo albma here's some info that might be of use. I've been experimenting with teams that will do well in Era-2. A few days ago, I slapped this table together to collect my thoughts. The Diplomat's, Political Hooks, talent is my favorite. Political Talents table (link)With the right build you can make allot of money and rep fast doing Diplomat missions. Make sure one of your starting contacts is always a Politician. The majority of early peaceful missions came from a Politician. I didn't include Pirate's, Menacing Demeanor, because I don't play that type of captain. You might find some of this stuff useful Unofficial players guide. Thanks for the heads up on the new Lost in Space! +1

Give the Doctor job to two or three of your officers; make them learn the Generous in service talent; install several medical facilities on your ship. You'll soon be every Faction's friend.

Thanks Sinocelt, Generous in Service increases rep with a faction just for visiting a zone. Generous in Service unlocks at level 8, one officer could focus exclusively on Doctor until it's unlocked. startraders.gamepedia.com/DoctorA talent that increases rep seems a natural fit for Diplomats.

Even nerfed, Generous in Service is still a great talent, though of course it comes at a price: Doctors are hard to find at the start of the game, so if you want Generous in Service early(-ish; it's a level 8 talent, as tenbsmith pointed out), you need to have at least one officer focus on Doctor as a job, at the expense of other jobs. And of course, if you fill your ship with medical facilities, what else are you not filling it with? Personally, I disarmed my Galtak Freighter. I came to realize that weapons were useless unless I built my ship for combat -- at the expense of everything else. (Well, that's how it was a few weeks ago; but this game evolves so darn fast, it's hard to say if that still stands true today.)
