If I take a buff that gives bonus to range change and we're sitting at range 5 in ship combat, will that decrease my opponent's chance of escaping?

Ah, there isn't a section on "preventing an enemy from escaping" so I wasn't sure.

we could reword to be "vs. enemy ship' on the wiki maybe? haven't had any confusion on this point, however.

Ah, there isn't a section on "preventing an enemy from escaping" so I wasn't sure. All range change rolls are opposed. Each ship rolls their pools. Count successes, tally winner. See Wiki page "Dice Mechanics": startraders.gamepedia.com/Dice_Mechanics

So, if I have a +escape buff on, my opponent will have a harder time escaping?

So, if I have a +escape buff on, my opponent will have a harder time escaping? Sorry, I see the question now. No, Escape bonus is only granted to the one taking the action. Move bonus -- yes. Buff your move bonus to resist them escaping. Or nerf their move or escape bonus. But priority on nerfing escape if you can.
