Without a double hyphen or a technically improper semi-colon, this sentence makes it look like the Xeno might be the machine-based lifeform. So important, I'm sure.

Good catch. A tricky sentence, punctuation might not be enough, maybe clearer like this...
"Something older and more evil than the xeno, this machine-based life form is skilled in genetic manipulation, subterfuge, and the art of war."
(I much prefer editing your sentences to writing the ones i'm supposed to be working upon. :-)
