Thanks for the advice, certainly a bit of a dice roll involved with it but just pulled it off with a Zealot for DVS flying the Neutiquam Erro.  The game of kill everything, run missions between Prime and Core seemed to be the ticket.  After a number of failures I struck it double lucky.  I encountered a hive ship full of records, and before I could make it back to sell them DVS entered a spy war.  By the time I sold them (and the available stock on Core) I was at 100 rep and managed to get rank 11 "Titan Commander" by 61.3 (if only it was that fast to be a Titan Commander in Eve!).   As a note, one thing that helped with speed that I haven't heard mentioned (maybe too obvious) but don't worry about moral.  You can handle the health loss from the mutinous crew over the short duration that this unlock requires.  I saw a lot of people talking about using the ship with the water tanks, I just didn't bother hauling water, takes time to buy, takes up space in the hold for something useful, just flog the crew harder until moral improves.

I managed to get this today, on what I think was my 15th attempt. Finally got it with a DV Zealot.

The last 8 incarnations of this captain were the exact same, the problem I continually ran into was that DV suddenly became the most peaceful empire in the universe. I literally had several games in a row where in the whole 7 year span they didn't enter one single conflict.

What finally got it for me was a combination of all the above advice. Didn't worry about crew, training, or fighting (though I did buy fuel here and there) and just didission after mission with some record selling in between.

It's nice to come back to this game after almost a year of not having played it. There are a few interesting changes to it. (Trade missions, ooo!) Think Star Traders is still the best Trese Brother game, followed closely by Heroes of Steel. HoS is getting better every patch, so that one might be neck and neck with Star Traders sometime soon.

Still, let's see how long it takes me to get Rapid Rank III

I recently picked this game up again and this RRIII award was driving me nuts last night. I figured I couldn't be the only one and sure enough Google led me to this thread.

After reading through, nailed rank 10 at 62.2AE using a Smuggler with points in exploration skill. De Valtos gave enough contracts to be picky with the en-route delivery missions and two or three explorations gave plenty of extra cash. Buying records was the real winner.
Only thing I would of done different would be stock pile records until a spy war (I think I could of hit it 2 years earlier if I had done that) and use the Tempus Fugit for the smuggler's hold (I'm yet to unlock the ship).

Just felt I had to share and wanted to thank all those posting info in this thread (and every where else on the forum). Feels good to get this award based on tactics rather than the role of the die.

I got RR3 with a pirate de valtos i just killed anything i could loot salvage sell anything i got at the same time doing contracts like there's no tomorrow because with RR3 there isn't i got it in only a few years. Dark nemesis was way too easy to get you just have to make one clan and one syndicate hate you thats it. quick contracts 2 is gonna be harder then RR3

I finally re-did this unlock. Thanks for the tip: Negotiation decreases the time for buying/selling. So i used a Javat Zealot with 10 in both Explorer and Negotiation and 1 in all the rest. I started buying and selling restricted goods on javta prime, moved to javat mining. i had a custom ship, but the aperio caligo would have done the job, which i finished around 60.38

I had almost enough credits and rep for this award, and enough time to get the rest of what I need, but then some alien decides he/she/it doesn't want me to finish a certain delivery contract.
