I've been playing ST off and on for a while now and I was wondering. What are the real differences between the factions? I know the differences between them are listed on the "Create New Captain" screen but could someone care to go into further detail on them? Because some of the bonuses listed there seem a bit vague to me.

So far as I can tell, they're pretty much the same in order to keep the game balance even. The biggest differences for me are the areas of space they control and how you can use these for long distance contracts, and the ships available in the military base.

the areas they control, the % mixture of missions, the % of conflict types, the ships they sell in the military base, the ratings of the star port, the total ratings of the economies, the ratings of the spice halls, the ratings of the princes.
the higher ratings will generate more rumor hits, at longer range. more Crew will be available. Higher morale recovery rates. Better ship upgrades, more of the military and rare ship upgrade types. More of the rare ship types for sale.
Also, each Faction has a unique mix of captains, AI techniques and "most common" ship hulls.
This is why Cadar has a reputation for being Torpedo happy Cruiser freaks

Wow, I knew their economies and such differed, but I had no idea it went so deep that they had their own unique styles of attack or what types of conflicts they got in. I must remember to stay in close next time I get in a fight with a Cadar... Is there more data somewhere on the differences? Or are you going to just leave us to figure it out ourselves.

There is all that text at the beginning of the game.
Some of them are obvious, some of them are the "normal ones."
So, Rychart and Steel Song use the "default" system behavior, highly balanced.
De Valtos is a custom, heavy on pirates and merchants.
Cadar's behavior and AI, more than ship mix, set them apart.
Each Faction tries to be unique. I try hard to make it a varied and rich universe

This is why Cadar has a reputation for being Torpedo happy Cruiser freaks Hey, I resent that! Cadarians are true romantics at heart who view the universe with their childlike innocence. What could be more romantic than fireworks in the starlit skies? What could be more childlike than to press big shiny red buttons with an innocent grin? ;D

Just that the Warship AI for Cadar prefers long range combat Oh, so does it mean they are Nerds? let the machines do the dirty work? Don't board their ship or you'll get blasted with the "Squid Launcher, (fist pump) Oh Yeah!" Splat. Just asking.

Yes, we are. And I wonder why people avoid us... It's tough to be getting some love... just like in High School...

That would make Sheldon from Big Bang Theory the founder or Cadar.

Just that the Warship AI for Cadar prefers long range combat I believe that if the AI is true to Cadar believes, you should modify the AI to substitute "long range" for "any"
