It'd be neat to give a relic for Pyro engineers that goes back to the old range of 2 but balanced enough that it is worth it. Here's what I have in mind:
Proposed: Fusion Flamer (Relic):
GL 11 +8 Accuracy 2 Range 40% Penetration 72-86 Damage +92 Fire Damage +30 Plasma Damage +18% Critical +4 Parry
versus Hell-Mouthed Flamer (Relic):
GL 11 +7 Accuracy 4 Range 34% Penetration 69-84 Damage +88 Fire Damage +20% Critical
The Fusion Flamer would have these net properties:
+1 Accuracy -2 Range +6% Penetration +3 Minimum Damage +2 Maximum Damage +4 Fire Damage +30 Plasma Damage -2% Critical +4 Parry
It gains modest benefits in most areas although it has lower critical hit chance. The real trade is range 4 removal, which is massive, for range 2 removal which is risky and/or situational for sure. In return it gets a sizable plasma damage bonus combining three damage types for massive total damage and a moderate parry bonus as an emergency measure. The plasma damage allows a pyro engineer to deal some reliable damage to flame resistant enemies and with a total of 40% penetration, it has a respectable chance to land penetrating hits. But all of this is really risky because range 2 removal is awfully close to get to a Xeno or Narvidian.

If you want to reduce the range even further,
Bic Lighter Range: In your face Damage: Xenos die from laughter at such a pathetic act. Narvs shut down from processor overload trying to comprehend human sense of humor.
In truth though, I like your idea. Could make for some interesting play styles.

No I always liked 2. Player feedback pushed it up to 3.
