Its it better to save up and buy a new ship or should i just keep the starter ship and upgrade that one?

It can depend on the specific context, but, in my opinion, it is generally better to upgrade your ship to a high degree before purchasing a new one.

Keep in mind that most new ships come with starter components and so you need a solid additional budget to upgrade the ship, depending on how far into the game you are.
