Thinking bout words related to energy-power required to run global matrix... supercomputers, cell towers, servers, satellites...I need more words for the carbon footprint basically. In my imagination most of it will be wind farmed and informed... similar to how a pacemaker gets its energy to run from human host.

LordofSynWhere did you find "cryomax" ? Cool someone thought it a fashion hybrid of Dr. Zhivago and Blade Runner. Sounds more like a very effective prison system.

I actually don't know where I got that particular one. Auggies are anyone who is augmented in any fashion and not 100% human flesh and bone. per the request: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cageI originally started this topic for other writers of the genre. I have waited more than 20 years for cyberpunk to make a resurgence after it matured. Now that more and more projects are coming about with a cyberpunk flair, and with great inspired games and movies on the way ( yes they are in post production for Neuromancer) this genre is getting a new look with different viewpoints. As a few of the items that helped inspire cyberpunk overall, have come to fruition and we have allowed so many levels and forms of technologies to become so central to our lives in 2013, the genre had to change and get meaner and grittier. It had to be updated in our social networked world. We pretty much all carry a PDA now. PDA stands for personal data assistant. We may not have a PIP Boy 3000, but I am currently typing this [ as I have typed EVERYTHING I have posted on these forums] on my DROID 3 smartphone. This smartphone not only makes calls, but it allows me access to the pulse of the world, and grants me the ability to do so many versatile things all with mobility. We take these things for granted. A Phreak is someone who uses any technology in unusual ways. Phreaks aren't necessarily hackers, but instead have an innate sense of connectivity and "MacGuyver -ness" that allow them to use low tech, middle tech, and high tech all seamlessly. example: simple phreaking: back when one could find a payphone everywhere a Phreak would take a small audio microrecorder and record the pulse tones that the phone made when change was put in for a phone call. The farther the call, the more change was required. They would dial the number they needed, insert the coins, and record the pulse tones as the money was added. Once all of the pulse tones were recorded, the Phreak would hang up before connecting to get the change back. Now, using the micro recorder to play back those tones, the Phreak could make any phone call for Free.

Yes, LordofSyn thank you. I remember the phone man story from grade school. Thanks for the link too. I am in the habit of asking people everything. Sorry if that annoys. Yes, Wikipedia is a good start. However it never replaces the thoughtform. Socratic questions, genuine queries, it's all energy, yes? Ripples in pond. I see most cyberpunk stories as enlightenment parables. I see phreaks the way one may see Siddartha. That's how I make sense of a literature that claims to be about saving only the self. The only precedents I could compare that theme to are "Catcher in the Rye" and "Siddartha". Yet maybe when Holden Caulfield dies he is a martyr calls attention to what needs saving. maybe in his world people are better off without the little snob. And Siddartha... attaining a Buddha-consciousness is very much a singularity. A layman's example, Neo in first Matrix movie. Overall, your wish for the return of cyberpunk is excellent. It's return may warrant that people's are tired of being so afraid.

grävling lordofsyn does type with a dialect. You are a smart badger! LordofSyn apologies, I've been ill for a week plus. I like collaborative story. I prefer no Google docs. As I don't often use them... and anonymity is difficult to come by... etc. (Email..whatever) @missionhill, if you are still part of the forum and interested in a collaborative story, i am still game. PM me.

LordofSyn @aegis nice. Help clarify? Is an auggie someone cyber-augmented? Link to a Faraday Cage? I dunno what it is. I'll wiki it but would be good to learn from you. What is pronunciation of cishumanist? Like Shishumanist... Scitzhumanist... Cysthumanist? Interesting cuz is timely wit news of the South African Olympic Runner with the dual leg prosthesis whom was charged with murdering his girlfriend. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faraday_cage Basically it would shut down their wireless signal, yes...but could be even more detrimental to any/all electronics and cyberware within. only thing that could be worse would be an EMP that fries the circuitry. Shielded or no, it would be nasty and could only withstand so much.

I really like this thread. Once I finish with my current project I think I will print out the most relevant posts and look over the language to see what applies.

I realize this is one hell of a necropost, but I have to say ... THANK YOU!! I'm writing cyberpunk novels, and this is exactly the kind of thread I need.
Let me add for consideration:
frag - 1. f*ck (non-sexual); 2. to kill plug-and-play - 1. sex; 2. injectable drugs jack in/out - connect/disconnect from matrix jack - f*ck (sexual) grind (on) - think hard about something

I've been around off and on for the last couple of years and have neglected this thread as much as anyone else. It was a nice trip through memory lane and also reminded me that there was far more than I remembered added to this thread. Sadly, the Neuromancer movie fell apart which makes me wonder if it truly was I post-production after all. In its place, we have seen quite a bit more Cyberpunk themes and stories crop up...even the highly anticipated (by me at least) next video game by CD Projekt Red: Cyberpunk 2077. The best part about that is that they've got Mike Pondsmith, the original creator of the Tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020 (and further iterations thereof) on board as consultant and co-creative. After their runaway success with The Witcher 3 and it's subsequent DLCs...they have more than enough funding and money in the coffers to see that project to fruition. It has to be significantly better than what M$ did to the poor Shadowrun license.
