I like to hire a few guys every now and when (using my recruting talents) and when look if their stats/trait qualify them as a replacement for an existing crew member. Of course I can do that only if I have free bunks left. Also I like to hire as many new guys as I have recruting talents and when pick the best. I I have only one bunk free I have to hire -> evaluate -> fire for each recruting talent I ahve which is a bit of a pain. When I have no bunks left I have to fire someone to have a look at possible replacements (which is a bit stupid).
Suggestion: When hiring in a zone (either from spice hall or from contact) you may exceed you crew (and officer) capacity by a reasonable number (like 5). Only when you take off you have to be back to your capacity.

Unfortunately the game engine doesn't work very well when crew max is exceeded.
We are working on solutions in the long term for some of these issues.
The next game will take a different approach as well.

Unfortunately the game engine doesn't work very well when crew max is exceeded. Have the game allow us to over-hire, but as soon as we leave the Recruit screen we're dropped into crew combat, where the recruits fight it out until crew <= bunks? Seems like the perfect solution.

Thanks for the suggestions! As Cory Trese mentioned, we're working on a solution for STF and learning lessons to continue to improve for the next game as well.
