Hi, I would like to make a suggestion to have a feature that would help provide a moneysink and insurance against bad dice rolls late game.
I believe lore-wise, in the event of a death of a Star Trader Captain, the charter goes back to the family of the Captain? Well, what if you could arrange to have an Heir groomed by one of your closest contact at the cost of great money, time and influence? More importantly, it also gives you an opportunity to train your Heir as a different class by a different Contact so that you can 'class change' when you are bored with your current Captain but don't want to start again from year 1. Grooming your Heir should ideally be a multi-stage quest where you are given opportunities to influence the non-Captain traits that he starts out with as well as the ability to sink cash to boost his levels from Lvl 1 to 20 for instance.
This feature need not kick in when your Captain dies either. Once an Heir has been successfully groomed, your current Captain can choose to retire to some planet to become a potentially exceptional contact for the new Heir depending on the amount of wealth and power the previous Captain has accumulated. The type of course depends on what class he started as. Though I'm not sure if that's consistent with lore.
Such a feature is present in other games such as as Sunless Seas and Skies but they function more as a New Game+ and Continue file automatically. I would propose setting this up as a mid-game goal, something in the lines of 200k - 1M to setup and with a 50-100 influence, and with high personal Rep Contact to complete.
I'm happy to discuss this feature more either in this thread or discord if you think its implementable.

We talked about this a bunch during the Kickstarter. Loved this idea!

I'd really like a way to start a new captain, but not exactly from scratch. Fast Forward past this 'and then we grind until everybody is at least level 11 and we can afford a better first replacement ship' phase.

so turning stf into "dynasty"-like game? to be honest sounds good at worst and awesome at best. add genetic traits to be passed down to offspring along with dna (for ability scores), whole new level of politics between your bloodline and your faction, manage fleet of ships captain'ed by your sliblings and other relatives, bear the echoes of consequences of thier choices and actions, internal bloodline politics and conflicts, intrigue and ownership wars, and as time pases by ancestral weapons and holdings, ship and gear maintence and weardown (so 500years old ship will probably need 4x as much maintence/repairs as brand new one, but have *history*), said gear and ship traits (both positive and negatie), and so on. waaait, did i just described what i expected from stellaris so ck2.. in space? eh one can dream ;D
but i agree, ng+/heritage captain is nice and cool idea, but then the new one would require starting date much later than 210 for balance and logical reasons.
