So I was asking about the phrase "crew dogs" in discord a few moments ago: Going off on a complete tangent, is "crew dog" a specifically ST universe phrase. I've never seen it before to indicate a general sailor or spacer, or indeed for that matter I'm not sure if I've seen it before at all. When I referred to the "crew dogs" on my ship to my girlfriend, she thought they would be ship's pets. ... Hmm, ship's pets. That should totally be a thing too (rushes to suggestion box).
So I had this idea, maybe we should have ship's pets! They can literally bark (or meow) as an occasional substitute for the crew's mutterings/barks. Now of course you would need to feed them (erh, salary for spiced pet food?), but perfect for when your ship get boarded - guard dogs FTW! (and maybe with the right talents useful on away missions too).
(This is totally one of my less serious suggestions, but hey, who doesn't like pets).
