Do I need to do this to keep my unlocks or are they linked to my google account? If I can keep my unlocks I probably would not bother to migrate and just start a new game.

There is no cloud save feature, which includes unlocks. They will not transfer to a new device unless you move your games.

I read the link for using helium (my phone is not rooted) seems straight forward. Question though I am not getting a new phone any time soon but I do need to do a system reset on my Android as somewhere I got plauged with something nasty that keeps force opening ads and kicking me out of my app so using helium method can I backup my stuff and put it on same phone after I factory reset? Im also emailing the dev for helium with this question but wanted to see if anyone here knew answer first. Thanks.

mishaadams198828 - yes, helium provides a path to backups / restores / transfers without root or cloud save.

Does the Helium app backup/restore transfer work also on Star Traders 2 Frontiers?

Yes, the same techniques would work for STF
