There's a very thorough line-up of starting professions already - but, currently, running a hospital ship is a little difficult. That's because none of the starting professions mesh too well with Doctor / Combat Medic as an addition.
Being able to start as a Doctor, and then add Pistoleer, Bodyguard or anything else that suits your fancy as third profession would increase viability a lot, I think. And with a rich lore of Chaesin and Gestalt Technologists already in the game, it would be really cool to go down that route as a player, too.
An idea for Captain's traits would be:
Meticulous Care Medical screenings and care increase passenger mission payments by 10%, and all recruits receive 1 additional point in Fortitude.
Surgeon Used to working under pressure, starts with +2 Quickness and +2 Resilience.
Maybe -just maybe- something for the next major milestone? ^.^

I'd probably have it be an advanced unlockable profession with traits like:
Chief of Medicine: All crew members have a 35% chance of resisting negative trait mutations, +3 Wisdom
Surgical Expertise: All of the captain's healing talents restore 30% more health and morale

You know, I may just like your suggestion better than my own. Especially since I just noticed that "Meticulous Care" already exists as the name of a talent. So much for me being creative. xD

Cool concepts, enjoy seeing them! Not sure that we are planning to add doctor to the starting list at this time. It isn't something that fits into the purpose of Star Traders within the lore.

"Doctors" are probably not the first thing that come to mind when you think of spaceships, true. But that may be half the reason why I enjoyed the Crimson Pox arc as much as I did. In my mind, hospital ships fit into the Star Traders universe very neatly. For one, there's tons of conflict - and someone's gotta get the wounded back to planetary medical facilities for proper treatment. But perhaps more importantly: "Almost every important Grav has something they're willing to pay a Star Trader to do." Chaesin and Gestalt enclaves are far and few between, and if you are rich and in need of that kind of specialized medical intervention, you will probably want to make sure you don't snuff it on the way there. That's why I suggested the bonus to passenger missions, even though most of them are undertaken for other reasons. But there's tons of possibilities for Traits, obviously. The take of drspendlove is great. Another possibility would be: "Learn a rumour, if the ship's medical rating exceeds that of the zone." You know, people in remote locations seeking treatment, and spilling the beans on just how they caught that curious infection. All that said - I understand completely that you guys are only human, and have tons on your plate with implementing already planned features and basically doubling as your own support and troubleshooting team, along with your community involvement here. So there's no expectation that this (or anything else I post) suddenly materializes, and definitely no hard feelings if it doesn't. I'm just being enthusiastic, 'is all. ^.^

We love your enthusiastism. It is infections and helps us keep moving the game forward.
We have at least one more major Profession update coming to reorganize and rework the feature, specifically around traits.

I've been looking around and still need to catch up on a lot (everything) but one thing I'm not clear on is why any of the professions are locked? I'm also a bit confused as to the "fit into the lore", because we start off as a "grav" that basically got conscripted...meaning we could have been anything prior to that in our "life". But I'm probably missing something here lol...

But I'm probably missing something here lol... You're not conscripted, you are selected by the family or cohort to whom the charter was pledged. So absolutely, your background can be anything. The professions represent the types of rolls that you live in your star trading life.

Sorry I should not have said it like that, but I'm still not sure I understand why *some* of the missing classes are not there, and why 4 are locked. I get why the "Wingers" could be problematic.

Oh it's not that I dislike them at all don't get me wrong. Honestly I never even noticed Doctor was not in the starting list, I just assumed they all were. And I had only noticed Diplomat was locked recently when I was starting a new Captain and was curious.
