Feature request:
During faction selection, the menu looks at the map seed and informs the player of the relative danger of the starting system.
It can be a real ball buster to start in a high danger system, and creating captains just to tease that out is time not engaged in active game play.
This was a rough go especially when I 1st started playing and did not understand the mechanics.

That's an interesting idea. Do you have some thoughts on how danger level might be calculated? The first one that comes to my mind is whether you have access to other quadrants without going through a quadrant owned by a starting enemy of your faction. But that would mean that the default map and default faction is a dangerous starting system. Actually, even if the neighboring quadrant is an enemy of your faction, they aren't _your_ enemy until you take an action against them. So it isn't dangerous until you make it so. It is perfectly possible to start a default game and side with Steel Song rather than Cadar.
Another factor that could make a system dangerous is a pirate or xeno rumor. But I don't think quadrants start with rumors--they are generated randomly after the start. So there is no way to predict that a xeno rumor will start in your quadrant a few months after start. But I could be wrong about whether quadrants can start with a rumor from the first turn.
What do you think would qualify as a dangerous starting system?

It seems odd that one starting quadrant should be more dangerous than another starting quadrant. At the start, AFAIK, there should be no rumors like pirates or xenos which would affect the danger level of the quadrant. So all starting quadrants should be equally safe. Can you give an example of a dangerous starting quadrant, and also check in the rumors tab to see if it has any rumors?

It shows a quadrant's danger at the top of the screen when traveling through a quadrant or when selecting a quadrant in the galactic map.

I was more referring to the system danger rating in particular. Flying around an under skilled crew in a high danger system is bad news bears. I don't care how many skill save talents you overlap.
You could prioritize ship and xp to counter balance that. But to even know that, you have to start a captain, get in the game, realize "OH snap, danger 16 with underskilled crew warnings every where" quit (write down you seed of generated) and re-roll a Captain.
Never mind the somewhat hard case to make for putting XP high priority.

This feature is already on their list I believe. I'd be shocked if previewing quadrant danger weren't part of map seeds v2.

Oh my, I hadn't actually noticed the danger rating at the top of the screen! Another new thing learned.

My point is that no starting quadrant should be dangerous. If there are, then the OP's point is very valid. Can anybody show an example of a starting quadrant with high danger?

Can't paste in a screen shot, but: Default map seed. Clan Zenrin starting location. Danger 16. Sure that's bit as bad as it could be, but kinda rough.

SSC or Zenrin's quadrant on the default map are very dangerous.

Yes, all maps are different. Some are harder for some factions than others. We could identify lots of things that make maps harder -- starting danger, quadrant counts, system counts, links and optimal paths across the galaxy, number of lux pop worlds near industrial worlds ... the metrics could be endless that would say this map seed is unfair to that faction or this faction. But, that's the point of map seeds! You don't have to use the default, you can regen if you dislike Zenrin's tough start.
It is on our list to ensure the default map for the next generation of map seeds is better with regard to starting danger. But, to be clear, we can't change that until we rewrite the map generator for the next seed version.

I just think an indicator of the system danger before you load up a game would be helpful. Though if the prime systems are going to be hard coded to have an upper danger hard cap, it becomes somewhat of an academic point anyway.
Creating a captain, seeding a map, then deleting that captain and recreating another as soon as you see your faction of choice is system danger hell is not much of a game play loop. But who am I to judge?

But who am I to judge? I complete agree with that, 100%. We really have tried to remove as many reasons as we can for create-delete-reroll of captains without wrecking the system. This is a great one, would be easy to do since you know your faction at that time. Added to the list! The more fully realized version of this is a map browser in the new game screen, letting you check out quadrants, connections, danger levels, etc before you start at all.

Ooh, nice. I assume it would indicate your starting quadrant, based on your chosen faction?

Ooh, nice. I assume it would indicate your starting quadrant, based on your chosen faction? yes, it would just indicate all 9 starting quads.
