It's so weird that you can be defeated in Normal with 100+ in each category. You are talking about +100 in your different skills right? Having high Pilot, Stealth, Tactics should be enough to make you almost invincible in any semi-decent ship.
I've just tried taking my lvl 52 Normal captain out for a spin (purchased a brand new De Valtos shuttle, and hunted out the scum of the universe (okay, pretty much tried blowing up anything that moved).
Took out a Pirate Dawn ship (enemy captain level 52), Hull 22, Engines 33, Guns 24, Torps 14).
- took no damage.
Took out a Jump Jammer Capt= lvl 27 (hull 17, Engines 18, Guns 20, torps 8)
- took no damage
Took out a Clan Longbow Capt= lvl 53 (Hull 16, Engines 21, Guns 30, Torps 12).
- he boarded me once and in one action killed 23 of 25 crew, gave me 1 point of damage.
- I finished him off with my single other crewmate without further damage/injury.
My findings were that it is definitely harder in Normal difficulty compared to Basic difficulty in that it does take longer in combat, and the opponents are better, but using an unmodified shuttle and only water as a cargo, I can still confidently be victorious about any encounter I get into.
Just so you know, my capt's stats are:
Exp = 27
Pil = 55
Neg = 15
Tac = 28
Ste = 54
War = 14
Int = 15
Turns played 16,103
Credits $8,388,256
This was one of the first captains I created and as such, the stats distribution is less focused than what I have for my newer captains.
