So after giving it a try on the higher levels and still not up with permadeath, and accepting my beloved Captain is a ST Ghost . I created a new Captain on normal since it's the highest I can go without permadeath. Trust me, permadeath was not my friend. LOL I couldn't stay away until ST2. Still a wuss but a wuss with a Captain in the game.

Well try to train on normal without permadeath, so that yu try to avoid situtions that would on harder difficulties cause death. (hull crushes, engine breaks, running out of water fuel, etc.) So you can get training for permadeath. Not quaranteed to work. :-P

Most feedback I get is that the difficulty systems work as a ladder, playing on one to train for the next higher difficulty. This is the intent of an exponential difficulty scale.

Yeah u have done a great job with difficulties ladder,guys...honestly i played from basic to demanding in the order, and every diff level trains u for the next one...yeah as long as i raise this "ladder", evey action in the game starts to be decisive and so it must be done with major attention...The death in challenging mode is possible, but with the experience in normal mode,it's difficult "to catch"...also cash increase changes for difficuly....well,it's done in a reat way,i already wrote this =) really i've rarely seen these things,so good, in many games(and i talk about pc and console games)...!! And I'm happy to find this in all your games =) !!!

We try very hard for good difficulty systems and lots of variety in how the game works -- many games in one so everyone can find the one mode that is FUN for them!

Yeah, I'm still with my new captain on Normal. Although I am in a maxed out Resilient Cruiser and have more than 18k Exp on Level 40, from out nowhere during a blockade a little pip sweak managed to collapse my at that point undamaged hull and killed me.
If I had been playing on a level with permadeath I would have thrown my cell against the wall. LOL

I know, I was trying to max out holds. LOL
I really should have added more armor. Why is it the pip sweak ships that can blast all your armor and half your hull away? LOL They interrupt my blockade grove.
They also show me I'm not ready for the next level yet since every other day someone will come along and collapse my hull. And it's the itty bitty ships with real low exp. I check my ship stats after every encounter. I will have full everything and a little bug will get off one shot before I blast him to the Thul yard and knock out all my armor and half my hull.
And they're usually Thulun pip sweaks! LOL
Oh, and I switched to a maxed out hold, frontier freighter which has decent hull and armor.

Hey Ab357 ... another tactic you could try is play on Challenging in the FREE version of ST RPG.
It's easier to get going because the missions/map is constrained to a smaller area and there are a bunch of things that makes playing slightly easier in Free. You're not normally too attached to a captain that has just started out, but by the time they are say level 20, you start to care. That's when you stop playing free, and import that captain into Elite. If said captain dies at level 22, you can go and re-import the captain and start from level 20 again.
This in no way constitutes a save game type function - because once you continue the captain in Elite, you can't go and save the new captain's state in case of future death, and also if you do want to progress your captain in Free (to have a higher save to import to Elite), you risk the chance of permadeath and therefore defeat the purpose at which you created the free captain in the first place.
So ... in a roundabout way, it's kind of helpful but kind of not. I've got my starting captain in Free and haven't uninstalled the game. It's always there in case I do have a really bad day, but in saying that, if my Elite captain of the same name dies, it'd be many months worth of gameplay lost so I'd probably just go and create a new captain anyway.

I'm playing Elite on Challenging...it's quite easy, only with gorgeous errors u may die...The ehm difficulty in the difficulty is to well begin the game, then it's all a freeway ^_^ On demanding, for example,i still find some difficulty to pass starting 20 years of the game, especially with non-combat classes(For now, it was my objective, still not reached)...'Cause my trade is good, with rumors and good exploration, but my under valued battle skills(and surely a bad tactical planning) often do lose some battle...=)

Thanks for the tip! Now I have to wait an hour before I can exalt you. LOL I'm still finding that on Normal where I have 100 plus exp in every cat that a lvl 3 capt can come along and in two blasts crush a perfectly intact hull that didn't get a scratch during blockades. So I think I have more work to do. I'm also learning if you don't pay attention, your health can get down to 1 and you will loose to a flea.

My mechanic, Megan Goode prefers me whole. I like Blockades where they come to you while you take in exp, so I'm playing MO for the Syndicates. Next game I'll probably play MO for the Klans.
