Right now it basically switches between manual and auto navigation. If there was a way to have just a little more control over the auto navigation, I think it would make the game flow a lot more smoothly.
1) Add a "NAV" button next to "BRIDGE": This would take you to a screen that's similar to the contracts list but it would be a navigation queue. The default for this queue would be whatever is in the contracts list. You would be able to changes to that order. Maybe there would be a 10 destination maximum. In addition, there would be:
2) A FAVORITE WAYPOINT LIST. There would be a button to quickly add your current location or waypoint locations to a list of favorite waypoints (with maybe 20 max). You can then add these waypoints to the navigation queue and change their order.
In practice it would work exactly the same way it does now: Whenever you STOP the ship and plot a new course, it goes into manual navigation mode. START puts the ship back into auto navigation mode where it works off the automatic queue. Players can take advantage of this new functionality and change the queue around and add waypoints, or just carry on the way they always have.
