When you access the market on any given location, the game will tell you where the demand is. It will show, for example, "this commodity is in demand at pop and industrial zones". This is very useful to try and figure out which commodities to buy depending on what systems are nearby and where you're planning to go. You can easily skim through the atlas or even the sector map and see the type of locations that are on those systems, and can therefore approximate where you can buy and sell goods without having to go there.
However, that only works when you're already in a location and ready to buy or if you already have the commodity in your cargo. If you are planning to go somewhere and are wondering if there's a system on the way that would sell something that's in demand over there, you have to go back and forth in the atlas between the two locations to figure out if theres anything you can buy that would sell high at the other location. It's not impossible but it is a bit confusing if you dont know all the commodity icons.
A suggestion that could simplify figuring out where to buy and where to sell would be to add a section (maybe in your cargo menu) listing ALL commodities in the game, and tell you what types of location usually have demand and which have supply. You could also show information like whether a permit is usually required or the law level (?) It doesn't have to be super precise, but a tool to better plan trade routes without having to play matching images in the atlas would be very useful.

napalmstrike - killer suggestion, this would be a great addition to the cargo screen.

I'll just add some info that was shared from a discord port i made.
To the original suggestion by Napalmstrike i would like to add-on and elaborate it. Reading the suggestion a happy vision was formed in my mindseye, of a section/screen that can be accessed from the cargo hold (log the captains log from the ship status screen). This could be the known-commodities list Napalm mentioned. I would like to add a proposal to make this list relevant tot the current waypoint route that is set in navigation.
Further and also to the point i posted in Discord, the law level of the worlds along the route would be very helpful in this screen. As to the distance from route this information should be displayed...i would only be interested in the quadrant that the navigation route passes through. One could argue a deviation of 1 jump off the route could be acceptable for hard to find resources. But that could also be a next improvement step.
Anyways....just my thoughts to share. I know it would be a lot more lines in code than the few sentences in this post.
