I've enjoyed the game so far, on my first playthrough.
However, I've found that some elements get a little repetitive - maybe I haven't learnt some of the ins and outs?
Combat from randomly generated encounters while navigating always seems to result in reputation loss with the adversarial faction.
Even if I totally overpower the enemy, they'll fight me anyway... to the bitter end... every time. Seems no-one has a particularly strong self preservation instinct?
There should be an element for traders and explorers (and others) where they will assess how strong your ship is and decide to (maybe)
- run for it
- ask for mercy
- surrender part way through the fight, especially if you hit them particularly hard
Player is offered the option to pay tribute and slink away, but if you are strong militarily, it should be possible to gain reputation with a faction by letting their ships pass unmolested (gain reputation, no financial compensation), or by asking for a tribute yourself (lose reputation, gain moolah) etc.
----------------
Separate but similar:
How about coming across distress calls near your navigation flight path which you can choose whether to respond to
- could be an ambush - maybe the enemy gets one free attack with no player response... unless you have a talent which activates?
- could be an escape pod - return the occupant to their faction for a reward, or ransom for a bounty, or sell them into slavery (varying reputation changes and financial rewards)
- could be a ship in need of help, being attacked or damaged - tow them to port (minuses to your evasion and combat scores whilst towing them maybe?)
All in all, it would add another way of repairing a slightly negative reputation with a faction when you don't have a contact to do missions for, especially at the start of the game
----------------
Another quirk which seems redundant is to have a contact offer discounts for upgrades at a station with no shipyard.
Thanks for a great game!
