There are already so many advantages for fighting with your officers (e.g., multiclassing and bonus abilities for officers). However, not allowing crew to use weapons (outside of the locker) and devices makes it so that only officers can fight after the early game.
Let us equip our crew with gear!

Yep! We're in the process of working on a scheme that would limited use of gear within your crew.

I definitely think pilot gear should be usable by crew. An officer fighter or bomber pilot holds way less value than a multiclass combatant or ship officer.

Currently I use 3 officer slots to have one of each wing job as officer for the gear slot to help them. If I could instead just hire wing jobs as crew and give them a gear item then that would open up a lot more options for officers.

Interesting concept, that Wing Jobs would automatically get access to gear. However, we want to make sure we come up with a crew-and-gear scheme that allows for high priority crew combatants to also gain access to gear.

Is it really needed to restrict crew so much? Putting gear on a navigstor that gives +10% melee damage is not useful. But hey, if they want to waste the slot why not? Maybe they are worried about being boarded. 😂
Maybe then you can have gear that negates a specific trait? That xenophobic navigator might panic less with a piece of gear that grants +1 ini against xeno.

akawolfywolf - the gear does need to be restricted yes. For a 42 crew ship, it would be a mistake to ask players to assign and manage 42 new pieces of gear.
