Here is an interesting idea how to add some specific variety to ships, while keeping up with the mass issues.
Right now, a 5000 or 6000 carrier suffers in that it can't have enough large slots to hold craft without throwing off the weight modifiers.
What if ships had a specific slot area devoted to things like Hangers or Cargo where they also got a weight discount. So a "Battle Cruiser" could have a cheaper Large Weapon Mount, a Carrier could have a Hanger Bay half off, or other things like that.
Ships have good variety in armor but to new players its hard to see exactly what ships do, this would be a great way to have custom better ships for the mass, while still allowing customization.
Logically it makes sense as well. A ship built with large carrier bays would be very different in design then a sleek Warship with a Dorsal Plasma Battery.
It could also let designers have a "discount" 7000 or 8000 carrier ship that begins with some garbage bits that could be retrofitted at high cost so captains could get into a larger ops ship. This would let them get into a hull that would prevent them from turning it into a murderous battleship but play around with Craft earlier.
It would also let people have a 7 officer 5000 craft while keeping the power levels balanced by making it a passenger liner style ship, if the Barracks were locked into the Custom Slot.

I like this idea. Especially getting 7 officers in a mid-large mass ship.
