Playing the game on Demanding and I get a message that I don't have enough credits when I click the trade-in button even though I have more then enough.

I will investigate if that message is perhaps also displayed when you have too many ships in one game?

Yeah, but trade-in is different to purchase .... you buy one but sell one at the same time so net ship qty = same.
Splaterpunk, can you let us know how many credits you have, and what the prices of the ships are. That'll help with trying to figure out what is happening.

I've run in to this problem as well. When using the Merchant (?) class that gives a discount on buying ships. I see the discount, I see the right difference for trade-in. I use Status to check my $$$ that it is over the trade-in cost.. But I cannot trade-in, it tells me I don't have enough money. This has happened when only having the first ship, so no chance I have 'too many ships'.
