Base Building.
One of the things that's sucked up vast amounts of my game time over the history of forever is base building.
Even now it's having a bit of a resurgence in that a lot more titles incorporate some version of building a better home.
My thought specifically is this:
Allow players to build 1-Starport to use as a home base.
Personally I think it could / would add a great deal of additional options for players in mid-late game.
Adding a code change for a hook to a single location (starting sector?) that creates an instance unto itself and treated as an expansion($) to the title.
More specifics of the idea:
- Cost of the base obviously. Make it a money sink that draws people in. It's easy to drop $5-million on a ship, star ports hold multiple ships in addition to everything else they offer so how about $50-million for the shell of a star base (ie. you get the universes' most expensive parking spot.
- Then with that skeleton of a base and your ship hanging off it, limited (ie. you cannot have everything and the dilemma to choose) options for improvements and items to spend even more sums of money on become almost endless and, would relate directly to building what any other starbase has out there except this is personal. Upgrade the star dock to build other / bigger ships, hire a limited number of contacts (even new contact types?...foreman for upgrades, steward to reduce maintenance costs?). Add on additional buildings (spice hall, science building, etc...). You get the idea.
- Events. I'm going with the idea of an instanced area here, but there could be specific and unique events that trigger when you return home. Pirates blockading your new home, rumors of a Xeno ship headed towards you (appears when you go to leave etc...).
- Crazy stuff like adding armaments to your star base. More you add the harder the events potentially become (not that you'd tell people this, ahem). After all load out your new home with a bunch of torpedo's and/or plasma cannon's and the type of pirates willing to blockade such fortifications would need to be tougher.
- Even crazier would be adding in totally new missions. Things that remain inside said instance, keeping it completely separate from the base game. Return home to discover your newly hired black market contact was kidnapped and now you need to board and capture the fleeing vessel.
- Absolutely insane...add in new visuals (fitting with the current graphics style) for the various aspects of the new star base. See construction of a newly purchased addition being built. See the skeleton fill in as additions are completed. That way when people leave they see the potential of what is to come...and when they return home they can discover what the finished projects look like in relation to the base.
And again this could be a true 'expansion' that people would purchase for $5-$10 or what-have-you. Breathe some new life into a fantastic, and in my honest opinion, truly under-rated game.
