I really really do not like the result when your ship is destroyed on lower difficulty levels. “You should have died, but you chose a wimpy difficulty, so you get out of it!” It’s story-breaking, immersion-breaking, and makes me feel like I’m cheating.
There are a couple of options to deal with this: You could simply have destruction not be an option for these difficulty levels—you’re just damaged to the level that you would be anyway. Or take the old Escape Velocity route (my, do I miss that game!) and have an escape pod that transports you to the nearest system so you can buy a new ship. Or something else I haven’t thought of. But it just doesn’t feel right to continue a game I’ve clearly lost.

calion - there is always the option of enabling permadeath in custom difficulty settings.

The problem with that the save game rules are directly linked to the permadeath options. That's an unfortunate design decision IMHO.
