I know the effect of bribes was supposed to be clarified, but I just happened on an Explorer, and the "Retreat" text still says the captain will "disparage our reputation".

Some additional information about ship types: startraders.fandom.com/wiki/Ship_EncountersI don't think we're planning on any changes or "clarifications" to the bribe mechanic -- I'm very happy with how it works, as a player and a maintainer. As always, we'll keep an eye out for feedback and changes in the player data as the game continues to evolve.

Wow, yes, that's good detail. Despite playing for years, I didn't know some of that.
Yes, I can provide a screenshot next time I see it telling me he'll disparage my reputation when he won't.
I'm still curious, though, why the option of a bribe is even offered in cases where it will have no impact. How can that be anything but confusing?

There are metas to achieve Acknowledge or Tribute using Bribe + Talents.

Can you get an Acknowledge with bribes? Or do you mean, you use the Talent after the bribe?

OK, I just gave Edge Almaen Faked Signature to try that.
Ran into a Bounty Hunter with Hostility of 0. Bribed him up to 1. Never got a button for Faked Signature--and yes, I checked to make sure it was ready (which it had to be since I've never used it before).

I hate to bump something, but what are the metas of which you speak? As I mentioned, I've tried training one of those Talents, and I don't see how to get it to work, because once you've given the bribe, the Talent button is gone. Thus, there was no way to get to "Acknowledge".
Also: it would be useful to have an indication about when a Talent would actually help where a bribe wouldn't--aside from the meta I can't get to work, the Talent only helps you when you're one level of hostility under the bribe threshold. (Yes, it can save you a bribe, but the cost of bribes is so tiny I can't imagine that being a factor in decision-making.)

Will try to dig up the specifics. Avoiding Bribe cost, Steel Song, expensive bribes, low hostility -- there are lots of uses for the Talents.

I think I just figured it out, but I haven't been able to try it yet: the Talents bump you 2 points rather than one. So what you do is bribe your way up to 0, at which point the Talent is still available, and then you hit the Talent.
Suggestion: In the Talent descriptions, note how many points of Hostility they remove. Aside from making the "Acknowledge" meta more obvious that would also make it clear(er) that there's no point triggering a Talent if the starting Hostility is -4 or -5.
