hey sleepy head ! - are your sure you want to undock with 0 fuel from this station ? (I'm sure exactly what will happen if you do !)
pressing escape from the black market with empty/room in cargo hold ! " you just got here - are you certain you don't want to take advantage of the low prices and buy some nice things ? " (its a bit of an involved process if you remember about it 2 seconds later ...)
Better yet pop up the buy fuel screen with extra I REALLY want to undock without fuel button (short best way to trigger spice perks ?)

If you were to implement something like that, I'd worn if your fuel is beneath the jump threshold--but honestly, there are lots of times when you leave a spaceport where anything less than a full load is borderline suicidal.

I would suggest turning on auto-refuel.

I would suggest turning on auto-refuel. What does auto-refuel actually do ? I play with the degla megalift . $ is can be TIGHT early on some random maps .. If it auto refuels just when un-docking bellow say 35% might be ok. (maybe bother investing on those fuel discount perks - problem is they don't since with fuel price at all - huge discount on dirt cheap fuel - pay full price on the expensive one ..because cooldowns..) If it auto refuels when docking (as the tooltip seems to imply) - that's a very dangerous feature (unsustainable on some random maps / starting ship combinations ) !

As the tooltip states, it purchases a full fuel tank on docking.

I would suggest turning on auto-refuel. TIL auto-refuel was an option. I just went into the game to see what you were talking about, and found it in the fuelling screen. Never noticed it before as 99% of the time I just tap the "Refuel" section in the Zone Services menu to do a full refuel. Same with other zone services. I usually forget there is even a submenu for each...

I just noticed it the other day, but wasn't sure what it did until seeing this thread.

The text in the game reads -- "When enabled, your crew will automatically refuel your ship when landing on any zone. Some starports sell fuel for outrageous prices, so be sure you can afford it, whatever the price."
Any suggestions how to make it more clear?

Ahhhhh, I see now why I never noticed it before. I've almost never opened the fuel submenu except in rare cases to only do a partial fill-up on zones with a very bad fuel price. Still, I wondered if I was just oblivious during those few times to notice the auto-refuel checkbox, so I took another look and found the following: If I already have full fuel, I see the "Auto-Refuel" checkbox nice and clear. I don't think I would have missed that before. BUT, if I have less than a full fuel tank - such as in every situation where I'd open the refuel submenu in the first place - this is what I see on mobile: The Auto-Refuel checkbox is completely cut off under the bottom of the popup's viewport, and there is also no indication that it is a scrollable interface. Though if I swipe up, I can scroll the Auto-Refuel into view: So I'm not oblivious after all . It is just hidden in the UI, at least on my mobile device UI (Galaxy S9).

Maybe the first time someone refuels in a game, you could have an "Autofuel?" prompt pop up? BTW, I think that, for a new player, the "outrageous prices" thing is misleading: maybe I'm biased by flying only small ships in the early game, but my impression is that fuel costs are never a significant factor, except in very rare circumstances when I'm flat broke (invariably, because I spent too much on an upgrade without thinking). I've never thought the Talents that give discounted fuel were remotely worthwhile, either, though I suppose if I were flying something huge with a set of gas-guzzling combat engines, it might make a real difference.

If you are playing on Desktop, most players use the keyboard shortcut bound to '1' by default.
