I'm sure this has been discussed in different posts but since I'm fairly new to the forum and I can't ever seem to find what I'm looking for when I try Search, I was wondering what everyone's favorits ship is. Is there a particular ship you look for and buy once you get to a certain level?

Until I find something better, I prefer the Frontier Freighter. It has decent hull, armor, speed etc. My current Captain is piloting one with 215 holds. Great for Blockades and Spy Battles.

For me when I am just starting out, if I can save up a few hundred thousand, I will either buy the Honor of Thulun or Javat Cutter.
The Honor of Thulun is available to you if you have a military rank with Thulun AND you have the Clan Hero award achieved on Crazy or higher difficulty. It's a fast, powerful ship that can easily be obtained no matter what Thulun planet you are on.
If you don't have the Clan Hero award (and I'm guessing that because you're relatively new, you won't have a decent Crazy difficulty captain with +151 RP in each of the three clans ... yet), then just get 1 military rank with Javat, and buy the Javat Cutter.
The Javat Cutter has 18 hull, 28 engines, 37 sails, 50 hold, 20 guns. For around $130k, it's a steal!
Once you have one of those two ships, you should be able to get around without having too much of an issue. It will allow you to go and look for other ships without being desperate to get out of the hunk of junk you may be currently in.
As to what ship you want ... it depends on how you play. Having a ship with large hold gives you the chance to make lots of money doing trades, as well as the potential for good fuel storage when you are doing deep missions into enemy territory. BUT, having large hull means your ship signature is pretty large. That means it is unlikely you will be even remotely stealthy and you'll attract more encounters than in a smaller ship.
If you like doing explorations or combat (especially boarding), you might want a ship that has more crew. Large crew can make boarding attacks significantly more one-sided in your favor. Drawbacks? More crew = higher fuel consumption, as well as a high signature and more difficulties in keeping morale very high.
Finally, most ships will do a reasonable "all-round" job, and you can tweak them with the upgrades that suit your playing style. You'll figure out what suits you best and go for that type of ship. The great thing is that Cory has added hundreds of ship types to the game mix, and so you've got so much choice open to you.

Mine is the Escape Shuttle. It saves lives. Or the life of one that matters...

slayernz - The question was more about YOUR favorite endgame ship. So even when your post is great for general ship recommendation / advice I am still curious what is your favorite kick-ass ship . And this one still stands mystery... blackgauntlet - Great choice!

My favorite ships are: Serpent Tooth as a starting ship - I do not know why, but even when this ship drinks fuel on Impossible like crazy, I still prefer it. I bet I just get lucky when flying it. Royal Class as early kick-ass ship - decent combat ship which brings up great memories of my first successful character on Impossible difficulty as well as some really strange encounters. Inquisition Cruiser as the game progresses - I tend to get this ship. It is great combat ship with decent cargo and well balanced crew size so it can be managed by not so experienced Captain. And being Rychart Inquisitor is fun . Obliterator Cruiser when I get angry - great all around heavy-duty combat ship. Less finesse more everything else ;D. Omega Cruiser is usually my endgame dream - basically Inquisition Cruiser upgraded with 60 more combat ready marines. But hard to get reasonable fuel consumption on Impossible.

I've not been putting in the hours I used to on STRPG ... but often ended up with the more maneuverable combat ships such as the Royal Dark. It was a medium sized hull with >30 engines, >30 sails, largish hull, good all-round combat capabilities. My current level 94 captain (Impossible difficulty) is still cruising around in a Royal Class ship. He's hunting for something better, but nothing seems to appeal to him. He's had this particular Royal Class ship since 303.42AE - it's now 464.51AE, so comfortably flying around for 161 years. Ships log showed: 57 AE - started with the Vae. 82.32 - purchased a Honor of Thulun 284.44 - captured a Royal Dark. 303.42 - captured a Royal Class. 464.51 - still flying that venerable old thing I don't change my ships much huh

Damn, 94? I've only had one captain make it to level 6. Most die at 5.

I was just curious what people's favorite ship in the game was, but I appreciate all the comments. I'm currently still playing the Crazy level pirate I created last week. He's up to level 33 and still alive. **knock on wood** I was sailing around in a Carnifex Cruiser with a crew of over 300. It was good except it was using way too much water-fuel. Based off of Fenikso's comment, I picked up an Inquisition Cruiser. It definitely uses a lot less water-fuel and is faster, and it looks cool. I renamed it the Thulun Inquisition and it's what I'm using now. I've been searching everywhere for an Omega Cruiser but I can't find one. I saw one earlier in the game with this captain but the cost was almost 1 million credits and I couldn't afford it at the time. Hopefully I'll find one before too long and upgrade to that. I'm shooting for level 50 with this captain to unlock the Golden Age award.
