I apologize in advance if this has already been covered somewhere in this forum. I would love to see an unlock-able or for-purchase escape pod as an alternative to the "hull collapse" instant death. I think the "game balance" would remain intact (I know how vital this is to us pen-and-paper gamers). You would lose your ship, your cargo and possibly your officers (better have money in the bank!). You would be left in a tiny sad escape pod with only one thing on your mind....get to port and pull your career back together. Nothing with weapons or any frills...just a ride back to the nearest port. Much like the "doughnut" spare tire on most cars. Its intent is to get you to the nearest help...not tour the nation. Get popped in the escape pod and it's lights out for good but at least you had a chance to survive...and not have to start over......again.

Such a great idea. What is one to do though if they don't have another ship in their dry dock, and no money to spend on another ship? Would the escape pod be usable for a certain period of time?

The escape pod option is a military shuttle that is given to the player when the original ship is destroyed.
It uses the same mechanic as a base-building ship. We created the system several weeks ago, for escape pods and base-builders.
It is a big hit, getting stuck in a shuttle. Very easy to get caught and arrested or worse.
The shuttle is a regular ship ... no limits other than being small.

Also, the Escape Pod should not have an escape pod...

Can the escape pod be pre-programmed with a user definable destination? Or perhaps be sent to the star map and destination set there?
I'd hate to be sent to an unfriendly planet with no way to reach home.

you'll just be where your hold ship died, in a little ship.
