I went to one of the rychart planets in the top left of the map (can't remember which) during a surplus of luxury rations. At this point, buy price was $4 and sell price was $-2, ie I would have to pay to leave luxury rations on the dock. While this doesn't actually break the game, surely the minimum price should be $0 or $1?

I imagine something like:
"Guys, it is not easy to say, but I have just overstocked my storage with all this crap. And suddenly Solar War has broken up! Nobody wants to buy this Luxury stuff anymore. And as you can I need more space for Weapons. So I will actually pay you if you can free me from this misery. It is just something around two hundred billion tons, will you?"

From a merchant's perspective, he knows the planet has waaaay too many luxury rations and all of them are getting close to the "best before" date. The absolute last thing he would want is to actually acquire more from some hoity toity space trader (who can afford to own his own ship). You are lucky that the price he charges you to take yet more of an item in surplus is only $2 credits.

The minimum should probably be $1 but figuring out how to add that to the equations may take more work than it is worth

I didn't mean to come as as unconcerned about quality or discouraging you from reporting / requesting that it be fixed.
I will be taking another look at this and I may very well find an quick solution to fix it.

add a logistic function around prices that drop below 1. Then make sure you tweak it to asymptote at zero.

It's a type of equation often called an S-Curve.
Useful in many ways ... and a clever (although inapplicable) suggestion for this issue.

What about the ole "max" formula? eg max(0, buyprice) If buy price is +$, then the buy price will be +$ If buy price is -$, then buy price will be $0 Maybe that doesn't apply outside of spreadsheets
