After yesterday's fiasco I have been thinking about ways to help keep the development moving but also reduce the impact on our players who aren't interested/friendly.

Yes, if it could be installed without affecting my existing install and captains AND with a 'copy captain from retail' option so I can bring a captain across to test without creating a new one.

I agree with Gandalf, if you could make it similar to the free/elite model where a captain can be copied across, I'd definately be keen to help.

Only if it doesn't affect my regular game. I realize that being a beta version, it may be impractical to copy data across at times. It may work in some instances, but depending on what you implement, a fresh cap'n may be needed.
Peace

Sounds like a hoot.
Displaying more of the in-game calculations (maybe via toasts?) might help with bug catching.

If you follow me on Twitter (http://twitter.com/#!/corytrese) you probably already know, but ...
1) I've built a Robotium program that can play Star Traders RPG. Hopefully, that will help me test more configurations faster in a totally automated fashion.
2) I am building a "Crash Report" application that will side-car into all Trese Brothers games to collect and send crash reports. It will allow us to have, essentially, a 60KB OPTIONAL package with INTERNET permission. That will help anyone running ST RPG to send performance stats and anonymous crash reports to us, but won't require outsiders to suffer additional permissions and such.

Excellent! I can keep playing ST Elite for fun, and ST RPG for betadventures

As fast and frequently as you respond to suggestions and bug reports, and post updates to the program, a lot of us already feel like beta testers.
Most of us on this forum want to help you make this great game even better. I think its safe to say you will have plenty of beta testers when you need them.

Brent,
It is my desire to help remove some of the "this game is in beta" feeling for the normal player while retaining the rapid response and regular releases.
One thing I have realized is that I do not have enough devices to test BIG changes to a satisfactory level. Releases like v3.0.7-v3.1.0 were great during testing (testing in the emu and my handful of devices.)
Not only that, but they represented a huge leap forward in terms of map performance and functionality. Although hidden at the time, 3.0.7 supported smooth zooming in and out on the main map -- essentially making the zoom map pointless. It seemed great but it crashed on apparently a substantial number of devices -- some of which are very similar to my test sets!
I am beginning to see the core challenges of Android for indie developers and the market support (like HTC or Sprint's network connected test devices) is prohibitive for $2 games at my level.
A beta edition would let me move BIG changes to the beta. That edition would be "1-2 weeks to release" changes, especially big scary ones.

Sign me up! Getting the big changes 1-2 weeks early is more than worth a battery pull or two!
