I'm playing the awesome game that is ST Elite on a Samsung Galaxy S with Android 2.3.3.
I often hit the home key if I have to stop playing and do something else (at the end of coffee break) and resuming the game can sometimes produce a minor fault:
If I was on a planet and inside the exchange, I resume the game inside the exchange and buy/sell some cargo. Once I leave the planet, I get the pop-up mesage "preparing ship" as if I'd just started the game, and then I go to the status screen and see that my cargo has disappeared/reset. BUT (say if I just sold a lot of cargo and made some money) I still have the bank balance from after completing the trades, rather than it resetting to the amount of money I had when it went into suspended mode.
Sorry to be such a pain in the arse, I can live with knowing that I need to go into orbit before buying anything from resume. Bet you never thought anyone would be so cruel to your mastery of Android sleep commands etc. (Also, I would like to note that the game is even more awesome as it never eats my battery whilst in suspend mode)

Of course I expected people to do this. I test this exact thing on several devices.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S with Android 2.3.3 and it works as expected. I'll do some more testing I guess.

I've actually had this happen, but instead I go to my messages, and when I come back this happens. Although somehow it works itself out once I go into orbit. Sometimes. And I'm playing on Xperia X8 with android 2.3.7

No task killer - I leave it running in the background or exit properly. I'm quite rigorous in never having much running in the background, I always exit the Mesages apps etc. when I've finished.
But I do have a Windows-phone style app "Launcher 7" if that helps. Rather strange, but I prefer that layout! Don't worry, it's a very minor thing and I avoid it hapenning now.

When you go into standby or press the home button on your phone, the game swaps to being a background process. The thing with that is that a lot of the things in the game cache (that haven't yet been written to game file) are vulnerable to being purged by the phone itself. So if at all possible, exit to the game menu and quit rather than just flipping to standby/home. That way, everything that needs to be saved IS saved.
If you've got to standby/home your phone, quickly get to orbit first. Most things will be saved properly. You'll probably have noticed that if you've left the game in background long enough, you'll always find yourself in space when you come back to the app. You might have been deep in the middle of combat ... or half-way through an explore activity, and yet, a couple of hours after you standby/home, you're back in space.
The real bummer is ... the stats that are saved seem to be the detrimental ones. Your health is as low as it was, your ship damage (including hull/engine damage) is saved, and all that type of stuff. Your cargo gains may not be though.

Star Trader sucks?
Have you tried Cyber Knights RPG? Air tight saved game state.

I was actually able to reproduce this. And I have no idea how to fix it.

The only thing I can think of is increase the triggers to save captain data. However, this could unnecessarily slow the game down. To limit the impact, perhaps select key "exits". I know that if you leave the Star Dock, Exchange, or Spice Hall, you expect any changes you have made to be saved into your permanent record. These would be a start.
In addition, there would be stuff done in Wilds that would be important for saving when you exit. Eg, Explore, Harvest, Cache.

Well it's not only Saving but Loading as well, and that gets very complex, especially with the way ST is built.q
