I am always reading on this forum- "Where are the aliens?" "How come I never see aliens?" "I want to see an alien." ...and so on... You know what??? If you're not seeing aliens you're a lucky MFer. I run into them all the time and I hate it. Out of at least 100 or more hostile encounters I've won one time. I just lost a level 26 very promising young captain to a level 98??? sadistic lizard with mommy issues. I knew I was screwed, so I tried to ram to destroy my hull and he laughed at me. Even with a pilot officer, advanced bridge, sail probe, and 57 sails I couldn't regain distance to ram again. I had a templar officer, and veteran officer and he murdered my entire crew in one turn. He killed me in 3 turns. This is nothing new for me. It happens all the time. The reason I posted this in the "tips" section is because I need a tip or two. I've read all the advice on how to find aliens, and done the opposite. I don't carry artifacts around much. I avoid dead planets. I try to make a mental note of alien attack rumors, but that's difficult to do. I know that the possibility of an alien attack when you least expect it makes the game more interesting and exciting, but come on, I'm at 1 win vs 100 plus defeats. My only victory was because I was a level 55, and he was a level 78. At least that was a semi fair fight. Every other time they're like 10X your level. I'm not saying that aliens should be easy to defeat, but the game would be more fun if it was a bit more balanced in this one respect. I also wanted to know if there was any truth to the rumor that there were alien kill/capture contracts available with the templar officer? I've never seen one.

For closing or gaining distance on an enemy in combat it is more important to have high Engines. I have the same problems until I can afford the Slayarz Cruiser with 60 engines. Which I upgrade +11... this solves most problems and no enemies have since shanged range in combat. However, then as a level 43 I come across a gorram level 1453 Space Hive (on Challenging, for frack's sake!) and it doesn't end well... although prior to that I did run across aliens who were at level 503 and 902 (I was about ~30) who ran away from me.

I agree that engines are more important for changing range in combat. I am also fond of the Slayarz Cruiser. It's especially good for ramming enemy captains who you don't stand a chance against in a straight up fight. It may be a dirty was to fight, but when you're a level 50 and they're a level 90 and they're trying to rob you... You do what you have to do. It is a fine ship. I was in a Spear Cutter the last time I was raped by aliens though. I find that I can make a lot more money in that ship. It doesn't matter if you have 100 engines when an alien is 4X your level. Back to my original point though, don't you think the game would be more fun if alien attacks were just a little bit closer to a fair fight? Oh, and you mentioned space hives... I've never come close to catching one. I don't even try anymore. I stay at level 1 just to get a foothold. Anything beyond that feels like cheating.

I don't know about you guys, but the aliens I've encountered, I alwayes beat. Crazy insane and even impossible. Here are some tips. 1. Have a military officer, veteren officer, and templar officer (You should have all 3) 2. Get a big ship (40+ hull). One with a lot of crew, a lot of hold space, and a lot of hull. Thse ships are slow, but are very hard to defeat. 3. After getting the big ship, if crew is 180 or more, get water fuel tank, cargo hold +20%, escape shuttle, hyperion structure, titan components if your ship has more sails than engines, advanced sail system if your ship has more engines than sails or if your ship has an equal amount of sails and engines. If your crew is 180 or less, get the same upgrades except rather than the water fuel upgrade get the battlship architecture upgrade. 4. After your ship is fully upgraded, your ship should have a hull of 40 or higher, a crew of 180 or more, and a hold of 140 or more (including the hold from the water fuel tank which isn't displayed in the ships statistics), engines and sails both over 35, and with one or both of them (engines and or sails) being over 40. Make sure your ship is fully staffed (Alwayes) and that you have th 3 officers: Military, Templar, and Veteren. Your armor should also be more than one half your hull also after these upgrades. 5. Get weapns weapons weapons. You should have never more than 60-65 holds of water fuel and or luxury rations and all the other space should be weapons. This means that you should have over 70 to over 100 weapon on you, at all time, and you should be fully staffed at all time, and be fully repaired (torps guns engines sails armor hull at maximum) at all times! The more weapons you have, the more powerful you are in boarding. Have as many weapons as you can while still having enough room for wf 6. Make sure negociation and explorer are at 1, do not invest in them, ever. Only invest in pilot, stealth, tactitcs, intimidation, an warrior. Make sure intimidate warrior and tactics are all equal at all times, and your pilot of stealth are 4 to 6 higher than intimidate warrior and tactics at all time. Never have unused xp. If you have enough xp to increase your skills at any time, do it. Just follow the guidelines that were just said. Congradulations! It is now impossible for you to be defeated by boarding via aliens or anyone else (unless you get super unlucky, or they're rediculously higher than you in level, like 3x)

Hey Starfixer, I appreciate your input. You seem to have missed my main bitch on this thread though. What I was trying to point out is that its been my experience (...and there are many...) that with the exception of one encounter the alien has at least 4X your level. It's simple math. I know Cory says that every alien can be defeated, but I don't see how. The reason I posted this was to see if anyone agreed that maybe Cory could take the edge off a bit, or quit cryin and fight like a man. Based on your reply the aliens I'm running into have a disproportionately higher level than the ones you're seeing. It just seems to impossibly unlucky that every alien I encounter (not including space hives) has 4+X my level.

I've never encountered aliens 4x my level (except hulls which aren't hostile). Still with my advice you definetly stand a chance. You underestimate what holding many weapons can do. Get the harbinger carrier and the following upgrades: Cargo hold +20%, escape shuttle, battleship architecture, advanced sail system, hyperion superstructure. When your done you'll have a ship with 50 hull, over 20 armor, over 40 engines, over 50 sails, over 200 crew, and enough cargo space to store over 110 weapons while stil having plenty of extra space. Have the 3 officers templar military and veteren and follow my advice with how to use your XP. Cary 101-131 weapons on you at all times. Stay fully staffed, make sure your moral stays good, and have your ship alwayes fully repaired. Do this, and you will stand a chance against aliens 4x your level, maybe even want cory to make aliens harder!

Oh and with some alien ships its impossible to escape. However the escape shuttle protects you from execution death as well, at least from bounty pirates and military. If you feel you can't win against the aliens, and you surrender, you might be able to use your escape shuttle but then again I've never needed to surrender to aliens so I wouldn't know if with them its the same.

If you surrender they'll kill you. If you have an escape shuttle you need to get your hull to zero - ram ram ram!

If you surrender they'll kill you. If you have an escape shuttle you need to get your hull to zero - ram ram ram! Escape shuttle also works to prevent death by execution, not just hull to 0. At least that's what I remember happening to me, but I guess I could be wrong.

How sure? I've only surrendered to aliens once and got killed but pretty sure I didn't have the shuttle. Think I'd stick with ramming - who knows, you might get lucky and win.

You ram against an alien ship because theyre too powerful to be defeated by boarding, you won't "win". You may get your hull reached to 0 and be able to escape using an escape shuttle, but its unlikely, especially if they're high levels like you say they are. Id surrender while having an escape shuttle. Again not totally sure escape shuttle prevents execution, but like 95%.If you don't want to take that chance though (which is complety understandable) you should probably base your strategy on defeating them. Out of about 20 encounters, I've lost like twice. And it was cause I hadn't gotten a good ship yet or my ship was damaged. Your welcome to try ramming but I've tried it before with no success. Also in terms of avoiding aliens, there's not much you can do to prevent alien encounters. Same thing with increasing alien encounters (I've tried)

The Captain will avoid Execution by Alien and use the Escape Shuttle if the upgrade is installed.

Thanks for all the input fellas. Based on all I've read it sounds like I just need to man-up. My only problem with Starfixer's advice is if you have a ship with a giant hull, loaded with crew, weapons and fuel... How do you make any money? ...or are you suggesting to build a giant bank first, then get a military ship and kill every thing you can find? I think that's what you're driving at. I've never really played that way. It's all about the money for me. Most of the fights I get into is against people trying to rob me. I am going to try the indiscriminate mass murderer route though. It's probably fun too.

I usually play more along the lines of fighting vs. aggressive pirates or Faction enemies.
For dealing with the Alien like this, spending your money on several (say, 5) backup ships (with escape shuttles) that way you can escape the conflict as needed and flee to a nearby starport
