I started the Vestmarch Burns campaign recently and after about 6 attempts, I'm getting frustrated! I cannot even beat the first level. Well, technically I've beaten it a couple of times, but not without losing my Hydra and knights.
I wanted to ask the advice of the forum-goers. Which way is the best route to take? I've tried going right, but that just doesn't work. I've had marginally more success with the shortest route going up and tthen left but I get pinned down just before the objective. I've had the best luck going up and then right, but really that's not saying much.
I get the feeling I'm maybe misusing my flamethrower by keeping him to the back and keeping our rear guarded by fire. I can see sending him to the front and protecting him with phalanx fire, but I don't like the idea of sending everyone walking through flames.
If anyone has some advice, I'd love to hear it! But I refuse to drop difficulty below Hard!

chromeada - oh you choose a hard one! Vestmarch Burns has to be one of the nastiest campaigns out there. I remember bleeding to get the testing done, many tries. I will try to beat it on the Hard again and give some pointers. I do remember that if you go to the left, the last room before the objective is where everything falls about. Its a morass and you get stuck in a wall of aliens. For the rest of the campaign, I don't think you can survive if you lose the hydra soldier.

Yeah I've come to accept that I may (likely "will") lose a Knight or two (that's what reserves are for), but I will not proceed without my incenerator! Of course, so far that means I will not proceed!

chromeada - I haven't gone back and beaten it yet, but if you are focused on saving the hydra, then you may want to force him to go first, and keep him with the Captain at all times. It is often the rear guard who have to sacrifice.

Sadly, neither was ever heard from again! But weep not, my brothers! It was by their sacrifice that we learned the Hydra system was more dangerous than any xeno, less helpful than even a medkit! And now, take up your Neptunes, and we shall sink the scourge of Vestmarch below waves of explosive slugs forever!

And now, take up your Neptunes, and we shall sink the scourge of Vestmarch below waves of explosive slugs forever! I am working on some revisions to Hydra system now to ensure better game balance. Some ideas: - Higher Shielding for Heavy Templar Armor - Longer Lasting Fire - Blood Does not Put out Fire - Some Xeno Won't Enter Fire Those are just ideas, lots of simulations to run before I implement anything, but worth discussing.

chromeada - based on a lot of feedback (including yours) we may be raising the power of and effectiveness of the Hydra. This should help a lot with this campaign!

That's good! I made about four more attempts but haven't had/taken the time to play much. I beat it twice and got close the other times, but I can't seem to do it without major losses. Going right first with captain and Hydra in front seemed to work best. Then I left one soldier to die while covering our backs (though surprisingly he got a lot of kills!). The Hydra really shined (shone?) in the open, but would have done much better with any of the aforementioned improvements or if it had more ammo or if you could move after firing (as opposed to moving and then firing with 0 cp).
Anyway, I'll post again whenever I get back to it.

last mission of Vestmarch Burns ends with victory when all templars get to starting captain's position
but when all templars dies in previous missions and only captain survived - we can just make one move to victory

koles - thanks for the report. It has come up before and we did some work to fix it, but it's still a built-in issue with the way picking a squad works and the way the level was designed. That was my bad ... that type of level does not work well! Similarly, you can put every Templar but your Captain in Reserve and win the level in a single move! I will try to fix soon--sorry, we've both been flat out busy and traveling recently.

your right - looks like game should allow to operate on 'different' squads or templars in missions
