Idea Ripped from Nethack/Rogue Specific Captain names yield altered starting behavior example: Ripley: Begin in Alien vessel at war all factions including independents Buck Rogers: +2 Pilot +2 Charisma Spartacus: +2 Warrior USGov: Begin 350,000 in debt in vessel to large to properly steer (Hard Mode) Dr Who: Star Date and Position will randomly be changed from time to time Batman: Increased starting money more pirate encounters Han Solo: Smuggled goods increased chance to hide hated with Javat - If Javat chased by Bounty Hunters Flash Gordon: + Starting stats/ship but get attacked from time to time by "Ming Ship" that always escapes at the last second before killing you or being destroyed
For Cory: No Documentation but you could leave clues in the forums watch the feeding frenzy as people try to figure out what names work and add or change on updates. Some names make unlocks unavailabe - Dr Who: Fast Riser example For Players: Give more ideas with names and changes (Keep in mind game balance and ease of programming)

At start an unidentified Deep Space red sector is Atlantis - A hidden planet that requires x skills/cargo to locate during a patrol/surveillance, once located it will remain for x time before moving again and requiring new skill/cargo. Hints provided in rumors - Rumor 1 - A guy with 2 crystals and other stuff came back about tales of a fantastic planet that appeared out of nowhere. Rumor 2 - Anyone with more then 15 water has never seen the fabled planet Rumor 3 - More then 3 artifacts but less then 8 have reported responding to a strange beacon Thus you need 2 crystals, 3-8 artifacts, and less then 15 water to even have a chance to find during a deep space patrol, multiple patrols often required in the sector to locate Atlantis: Hazard 1, Explore 24, Harvest 24 / Urban 24/24/24 Award: Plato's Retreat - Water/Fuel Generator (Keeps ship at 10 water/fuel at all times) available at Atlantis star port

Those ideas sound like fun, especially the mythical planet as it would give a captain of whatever difficulty level, with all unlocks at that level gained, something new to pursue.

Found the Washcloth (Random event late game)
When entering a planet without a full crew you get a hitch hiker named Dabble Debbledox- He gives a series of quests involved in finding his washcloth Bounty Hunting / Explore / Etc... You may have to relocate him several times in random spice halls to complete the full chain... When complete you get a 1 time access to the "Very Unlikely Torpedo Bay" When the next torpedo is fired it randomly changes all of your stats, Ships/Abilities/Location/Skills/Career/Reputations so your High Pilot/Tactic Bounty Hunter in a Peeker is now a Smuggler with high warrior and explore in an admirals yacht. You do not loose or gain skill / rep they are simply rearranged.

I love the idea of an 'Atlantis' like planet that randomly appears, but I don't know whether it could be so highly rated... (I can imagine a myriad of balancing issues with a planet where every exploration trip turns up 9999999 artifacts!)

A billion artifacts would be offset by only being able to carry a little over 200 with a huge hold ship. It could also be offset by only being able to explore or harvest once. Basically, all planet resources could only be visited once, then the resources disappear, and the planet disappears as soon as you leave.

These are more templates vs fully formed ideas - Would love to see others put more flesh on the bones.
I just recently started playing and noted how it has very old school roots. Right now the game is very entertaining but lacks unique discovery/depth - Nethack Vs ADOM for example comparison both fantastic classics. By adding random singular elements it increases the unique experience of each person. So instead of Post I was killed by (* Random *) at (* Random *) while increasing rep as (* Random *) you might get a forum post like - Post Was lvl 15 and Playing Flash Gordon when I found Atlantis and was attacked by a Ming Ship that brought me to 4 hull before vanishing - Damn you ming - before I could even land an Atlantian scout sent a toast - Electronics Identified in hold Lethal force authorized. Sigh escaped in shuttle but Atlantis has already moved to another cloaked location. Guess they are not big on technology
New post Yea my atlantians hated crystals but found em again (16 Years) and my crew stays happy with a spice refinery internal upgrade. I think recruiting is easier as well - Guess they know I have the good stuff. I also filled my hold twice before the planet vanished before I could perform a third trip. To bad the atlantians exchange refused service since I used "Space dollars" instead of "Real Dollars" Just hope I find them again and they have the water/fuel refinery for sale.

For Cory: I like this game a lot - These suggestions are of course a selfish attempt to have you do all the work and make the game I want to play (LOL). Anyway - Thanks for a great game - Bought the Elite.

There is always a chance that ideas like this could end up in ST2.
