Maybe the forum represents a certain type of player. (hardcore!) This is an older poll though.

Lol, great poll. Clearly the Merchants and Explorers aren't on the forum. Interesting that Explorer was the far and away winner in the ST2 "What's your fav profession?" poll. I have a theory about that. When I was first playing ST, I couldn't fight. I really couldn't tell anything beyond -- "you stink at this", so I decided to go the 'buy more expensive ships' route. Since I also didn't understand the relationship between Spy and Solar wars and contract prices, I skipped them because blockading is boring. Unless you get favourable shortages and surpluses early, the life of a merchant (who isn't very good at fighting) is usually short and not that sweet. Thus Explorer quickly became my favourite class. Because I could easily figure out how explorers were to make money, and get that working. But, pretty soon thereafter, my games all hit some sort of plateau. Every place I went, it was one battle after another. So there really was nothing to do but learn how to fight. I started reading posts here. And I found one -- I think by @starfixer which had some other title but which I always thought of as 'how to board and kill everything'. And because starfixer, or whoever wrote it, knew what they were talking about, it worked great. I soon became fairly decent at boarding and killing things -- decent enough that I could up the difficulty level. The problem, though was I now had a great need for those military skills my early-days explorers didn't invest in. And as time went by, I kept looking at my well-built up explorer skill and thought -- all in all, I wish I didn't have so much of _you_. Mostly I wished like crazy that I had bought tons and tons of strength, early (I already had bought a good bit of Pilot, early) when it was easier to get. So I built captains like that. And stopped exploring so much. Explorer stopped being my favourite class, not because there was anything wrong with it, but because I was having so much fun doing other things. Thus I would expect -- based on expecting people to be like me, which is always a bit dubious, I know -- that Explorers are the favourite class of new Star Traders, but stop being so as they play the game more. But there is no logical progression here -- once you get better at fighting, what class you find most fun to play depends on your personality, and your mood at the moment, and things like that which point in all directions. This means that the 'not-Explorer' vote is necessarily diluted among all the other classes. But since there are always more relatively inexperienced players of a game then there are old, wily veterans, it doesn't surprise me that Explorer won such a poll.

How many people play ST? Seeing that only 17 people have voted, might be missing 500 or more votes to get the real picture.

makazi - the forum contains only a tiny fraction of daily players, email and Facebook messages we receive.

I would think there are at minimum three thousand regular players of ST. I have no evidence that it's less or more, just a hypothesis.

I usually invest a bit too heavily on explorer since I can a large profit early by just finding some artifacts on some planet.

I always invest depending on what I do. Explorer - stealth, pilot, exploration Merchant - negotiate, stealth, pilot -with 25 negotiate promotions cost me almost half the designated money and just in case, I don't need to be afraid of merchandise with independents (ships' prices are ridiculously cut too, but as a free member I don't find a better merchant ship than Aperio Calliga) Spy - stealth, tactics, pilot (stealth n°1 - after gaining some good ranks I might go for a torping destroyer) Pirate - Pilot, tactics, stealth (the tactics must not be overdone though, otherwise I'll just destroy every ship) Military officer - Dies too fast Bounty hunter - Same
I have never exceeded crazy difficulty though...
