I'm wondering if there is any way to allow enemy ships to surrender in a battle before they are either blown to smithereens, or severely damaged? I try not to do the unprovoked killing thing but once you start a battle, you either have to be violently victorious, or end up fleeing from the battle.
Cheers Stu

I'm working on allowing the enemy AI to acknowledge when it is likely that it will die, and decide to surrender or ram suicidally.
i'm certain that when the surrender logic comes out it will be balanced by something nasty like suicidal rams =)

Of course if the AI ship has an escape pod, that's another option. Then, you get to track and chase that sucker down for your bounty!

The suicidal ram probability should be based on your reputation. If you have historically let ships go without destroying them for salvage, then they shouldn't ram so much ... if on the other hand, you have a habit of destroying ships with all hands then yeah, even I'd consider the ram if I were them

Hey, what about the possibility of letting the other ship go? It's kind of the opposite of "Retreat", and allows the other ship to slink away with its tail between its legs.
There are times where some stupid pirate or Bounty Hunter from a faction that hates me but is allied with my own tries to take me on. After thumping him around for a bit, I just want to let him go as blowing him out of the water/sky causes me to get negative ratings with my faction. I don't want to "retreat" as that makes me look weak, and I sure as hell don't want to surrender.
Solution: New option, something like "let live", or "ignore" or "stop pursuit" would be useful.

Look ... we just come up with the ideas ... you come up with the awesome placement <grin> ... I know that there's a lack of real estate in the button section, but maaaybe, if our ship's stats exceed the enemy ship's stats, then the "Surrender" button should be "Ignore" or "Stop Pursuit". If our stats are lower, then it changes to "Surrender". Stats to compare would be: Hull, Armor, Engines?

Or... you could get a pop-up that states they offered to surrender or ask for mercy... and then you have ALL KINDS(!!!) of space to put a "let live", "laugh evilly while slaughtering them" button...

Having the button say "Offer Mercy" or "Break off Attack" should do a couple of things: 1) allow enemy ships to slink away without you having to retreat or kill them 2) give you a reputation boost with that faction because of your 'humanity'

Another thought ... During space battles, the "Engines" or "Deck" buttons are greyed out unless you are actually side by side. Why not use that space for one or two buttons ...
"Stand Down" = Stop pursuit or Break off attack type button. - this button will let the enemy run away. Benefits over "Retreat" is that (a), you don't lose a movement in the map (you don't get bounced back to the grid ref that you were moving from), and (b), you might get some minor reputation bonus for being merciful.
Second button "Threaten" = Threaten enemy space captain in order to encourage him to surrender without you needing to attack. Enemy captain response would be subject to: - your intimidation level - your relative ship strength - your reputation (are you known as murderous?)

Another another thought ...
During space encounters, there seem to be currently two options 1) Ship turns its prow towards you and you either have to go to battle stations or surrender 2) Ship hails you and you either have to go to battle stations or acknowledge
It would be great if there was a third option: Ship attempts to flee from you, and you either go to "Battle Stations" (pursue), or "Ignore".
This way, pirates, and merchants who are wary of your reputation can flee, and you have the choice of going after them or being nice. Going after them will have negative impact on reputation with that faction (because you are actively looking for a fight), bug ignoring them could have a positive effect on reputation.
This helps resolve the Pirate negative rep issue because if Pirates really do want to leave you alone, then this gives them that option.

slayernz, We are working towards a pre-combat menu that allows you to select from the following actions: Attack | Ignore Scan | Trade Status | Acknowledge What do you think of those options? I think there could be some really interesting stuff in there, like "you are hated by our Conflict enemies perhaps you want to trade" or "we are good friends with your friends we will ignore you for now"

Today there is no problem with Pirates that want to leave you alone. That works fine today the issue is with pirates that have very good valid reasons to attack.
What I have changed, due to popular demand, is that pirates (even those fully justified in attacking) now no longer have any Faction rank or reputation impacts after the battle. So, essentially, Pirates are not Faction members even when they have the Flag flown.
Pirates might have a Faction ship, but the Crew and Captain are operating with only a wink and a nod -- no Faction warships are coming to help with and the Faction won't step in for either side in a little pirate dispute =)

There have been times when I was patrolling way out in the middle of nowhere with low fuel and I bump in to a friendly or a merchant - but the only option I have for the chance to interact is to blow them up and loot their hold, or just say 'hi'. Would be great to be able to trade. Or perhaps if they are lower ranking friendly military, requisition? Perhaps too much complication though. Could easily be unbalancing. I like the idea. YesNoYesNoYesNo Arrrgh!
