Confused

I'm not sure how the mission/squad selection works.

For example, do I have to play through the tutorial missions before I can select another campaign that uses special weapons?

Ive got my basic squad, and a captain I have named but when i select another campaign, it asks me to name my Captain again.

Do I have to play everything through in order?

Am I being stupid?
