Where are the saved game files located?

They are located in /data/data/ and you will need 'core' and 'secrets_*'

is there any way to copy it without root?

I'm new to android and I'm kind of baffled that I would need root to access data created by my own userspace programs

As far as I understand the Android OS, you need root to access your userspace program data.

Developer's don't really have any choice to do anything else without requesting a bunch of scary Permissions at install time.
