The idea here is to enable the people playing free to unlock some weponry, armors, and implants kind of like in star traders. Of course the unlocks would require it to be completed in either the hardest or second hardest difficulty. E.g. Survive 100 days on crazy to unlock (something). Yes this is kind of like unlocking the lr15 bormok from aztek.

The idea is for something different than getting special rewards from Ladder Connectors? Some of them are weapons and armour.

We're planning on having an Awards and Unlocks system in CK and the plan is to include some similar features to ST. However, we have spent a lot of time discussing the various impacts on the game and the systems will not be identical. For example, there won't be any stores that say "you must unlock XXX or I will not sell you this pistol" There will be Award style achievements to check off a list, and story-drive accomplishments (like Gravling points out) that unlock items for that character. There are currently 4 weapons that cannot be purchased and can only be collected by the player for accomplishing certain tasks. This pattern will continue after we release the story mode patches and start building on those new foundations.
