May be if you have a Death Warrant, you should be authorized to challenge Pirates if they don't have trade certs (yet another thing to check for before attacking). If attack is successful, you should be allowed to remove the contraband stuff from the pirate hold (ancient tech, weapons, electronics) without reputation penalty. If you take more than that, then you might be seen as no better than the pirate you tried to stop.
