How about a color-coded breakdown of crew factions?
Maybe the First Mate can provide this report. He can purchase upgrades like 3D pie charts!
My crew doesn't like working against Independents? They're all Javat loyalists that I picked up on the homeworld! They should mutiny if I start wrecking Javat merchants, but why should they care if I deliver a message implicating some indy scumball.
If half of my crew is Thulun, half of my crew should get chapped when I take out one of their warships. The Cadars I picked up might perk up if there's a Solar War going on. The Independents should just look at me and waggle their empty spice mugs askingly.
The explorer guide suggests recruiting from independent planets for a hardy crew. Is there actually any mechanical difference in crew quality?

There is but right now the game doesn't make distinction between Security 4 and Security 6 or anything like that. A lot of Factors go into determining how much morale will be lost, how many Crew are available, how quickly they regenerate in dock, ect.
However the ability to say "12 men from Thulun and 23 from Javat" is not in the database right now.
I love the idea of tracking crew in smaller chunks, but i'm not sure country of origin is as cool as your other suggestion -- seniority and skill : 12 Recruits, 8 Sailors, 10 Seniors and 4 Master Crew
---
There is a mechanical difference when recruiting Crew from hostile planets. It is not in the UI and it is not nearly as cool as it could be!

In my imaginings, I thought my crewmen's primary loyalty was to the money I was paying them.
I thought of it like this, say you like the Cleveland Browns and you were born in Cleveland. You move to Atlanta for a job opportunity. You won't care if your boss is a Falcons fan even if he is obnoxious about it, just as long as you are treated well and are paid fairly. At the same time you are not a member of the Browns and never will be, you are just a fan.
In my fanfiction, I figured commoners might live on a Faction controlled planet and be a fan of a certain faction, but they have no real rank in that faction. Likewise, crewmen have no real rank in any faction. While they might have a liking to a particular one, they love money more. So your crew could have members from different places, but the worst they might do is brawl barehanded. Of course that would send them to the brig.
I do seem to notice that if I tried getting crew from planets that don't like my Captain, I would risk lowering the overall crew morale. It probably drops as my Captain fights to keep discipline on his ship.

I also think that the "recruited members are loyal to the Captain" comes from the fact that it takes a Week (usually) to sort out the loyal Crew at a Hall.
The Captain wouldn't hire anyone likely to revolt over his choices -- he takes contracts with whom he does for he is the Nobility of the Stars. So anyone who "would serve a Captain such as yourself" must be in line with the Captain's plans (whatever it is the player is planning.)

So mechanically, crews from worlds with Wild and Urban are tougher than crews from just Urban worlds? What about enslaved spacers?
Also, my morale seems to be stuck at 7 no matter how many rounds I buy. Is this a result of losing so many men on exploration missions?

Also just because you pick up crew from this planet does not nessesarily mean they are from this planet as rumor has it refugees have been stranded on this planet. Or crew have been dismissed nowhere near their home planet.
