Gentlemen/Ladies(and I use the terms loosely) , I am new and would like to understand morale better: 1) What causes loss of morale?(Working against Independents, lack of water fuel, I know) 2) How do I increase morale?(I know about entertain and buying rounds of spice) 3) How do I get my morale above 7(Content) once it fell below it? Thanks for any input/advice: Don't hate me but I am Clan Javat through and through!

First: POWER TO JAVAT! Now... 1. Morale loss can be caused by surrendering to pirates, lack of water fuel and food, working against independents(includes killing), I think morale can take a hit durring a poor battle( clarification?). That's about all I know about loosing it. 2 and 3. Spice and entertainers yes, but as you said they only get you to 7. Completing contracts can push you past 7 up to 10. Zealots have an added bonus of being able to generate morale up to 7 by destroying ships. They like pretty lights.
There are several techniques involving cargo such as spice and vudca, along with certain officers that I don't fully understand. Hope this helped.

Almost forgot, Pirate crews don't lose morale when fighting Independents.

Raising Morale past 7 is achievable by successful Contract completion and Combat Victory. The Crew likes a profitable and goal-oriented Captain.

Morale loss: surrender to hostle AI, imprisonment, combat loss, no water-fuel/food, contracts vs. Independents, enslaving crew, crew death, HP loss, not doing anything (fighting Indys don't decrease nor increase morale and surrender will usually not decrease morale unless the enemy is hostile or it results in imprisonment). Intimidate skill helps prevent morale loss. Military officer helps prevent morale loss.
Morale gain: entertainment/spice (to 7), contracts, combat victory. First Mate help with morale somehow. With zealot and morale 4+, 60% chance of +1 morale for "destroy" after defeating ships
Luxury-rations are consumed without water-fuel to prevent morale loss, an with water-fuel slows morale decline by 2% (3% with first mate) (whatever that means)
Vodka increases first mate's bonus, allowing him to bribe crew bosses (which helps morale somehow). Without first mate, vodka is useless.
Spice in-hold increases political and pilot officer bonuses. Doesn't do anything morale-related.
Morale isn't only neccesary for preventing mutiny. Morale plays a role in everything: combat, exploring, harvesing, even deep-space travel

Thanks. Actually I have a question about morale. What is the first mate's morale bonus? Gradually increase morale, help prevent morale loss, increase crew effectiveness?

If you think of every action in the game involving a dice roll, then the First Mate's bonus will add a modifier to the roll so that you effectively roll higher numbers. There is still a possibility of taking a morale hit for a particular action (eg attacking independents), but the chances are lower.
In terms of raising Morale, win fights, complete contracts (although you get more of a boost if you do contracts against other factions rather than against independents).
You don't get any real morale boost from a successful explore or harvest though, which is a shame.

Also, can the text on pirates be conditional(if you have a trade permit) so it says they will let you pass without looting your hold? It would make the learning curve slightly shallower for newbies(like myself). Thanks, S

From looking at the logs, and I'm kinda guessing at which text you mean, I think that was added to make it more clear for Newbies that you should NOT Surrender to them.

Good catch. Logging this as issue #739 What? Wait, no! I like being able to surrender to piates without being looted. If you have a permit, you're legaly alloed to carry goods and therfor pirates don't loot you. Please don't change
